Our Top Recommended Big Brake Upgrade Kits For Your Volkswagen Golf MK4
Most Mk4 Golf brake conversations start with a car that has outgrown its own hardware. The remap went on last winter, the coilovers before that, and somewhere between a quick road car and the first track evening the standard sliding calipers stopped feeling up to the job. We hear a version of that story most weeks, because the Mk4 covers everything from a 1.4 shopping car to the 3.2 V6 R32, and a lot of them are now running more power than they left the factory with.
This page runs through the kits we would actually put on the car, from the two manufacturers we lean on for big brakes: Tarox in northern Italy and HiSpec Motorsport in Dartford. Every kit here is a complete front axle conversion that bolts to the standard hubs, and the right one comes down to two things, your wheels and what the car does at weekends. The full Mk4 Golf range is on the site if you want to browse it raw.
- Every kit is a complete front conversion: calipers, two piece floating discs, mounting bells, Mk4 specific brackets and fitting hardware
- HiSpec publish the wheel size each kit clears, from 15 inch at 285mm up to 18 inch at 360mm
- Tarox kits arrive with braided hoses and Corsa pads already fitted; HiSpec price theirs without, so you choose the pad compound
- Tarox list the Mk4 by engine, so the 1.8T GTI, 2.3 V5 and R32 each have their own listing at the same price

Two brands, two ways of building a brake kit
Both of these companies machine their own calipers from billet aluminium and both build every kit for the specific car it is going on. Where they differ is the detail, and the detail is what you are choosing between.
Tarox
Made at the Tarox factory in northern Italy. Calipers are CNC machined from European billet alloy and hand assembled, discs are heat treated and hand balanced to 0.05mm. Kits arrive complete, with vehicle specific braided hoses and Corsa pads already installed, and Tarox state full compatibility with ABS and ESP.
HiSpec Motorsport
Machined in Dartford from 6082 T6 billet aluminium, calipers and pistons both. Every kit is made to order in up to 28 working days, with the calipers finished in your choice of black, red, blue, gold or silver. Pads and braided hoses are priced separately so you pick the compound.
The number that decides it: your wheel size
A bigger disc needs a bigger wheel to swing inside, so the honest first question is not how much braking you want, it is what wheels the car runs. Both makers publish a figure per kit and both are in the table below. The reason those numbers are dependable is that the wheel a kit needs is decided by the kit, the disc and the caliper sitting over it, so it does not change from one car to the next. What does change is depth, because the back of a spoke can sit close to a caliper even on a wheel of the right diameter, and that is the part we check with you.
| Kit | Disc | Smallest wheel |
|---|---|---|
| HiSpec 285mm Billet 4 | 285 x 24mm | 15 inch |
| HiSpec 300mm Billet 4 | 300 x 28mm | 16 inch |
| HiSpec 310mm Billet 4 | 310 x 28mm | 16 inch |
| HiSpec 335mm Monster 4 / 6 | 335 x 28mm | 17 inch |
| HiSpec 360mm Mega Monster | 360 x 28mm | 18 inch |
| Tarox 323mm Sport | 323 x 28mm | 17 inch |
| Tarox 340mm Super Sport | 340 x 26mm | 18 inch |
HiSpec 285mm Billet 4: keep your 15 inch wheels
Not everyone wants bigger wheels. On an early GTI or a clean standard car the original 15s often suit it, and this is the kit for that car. The Billet 4 is HiSpec’s most popular caliper, a four piston design they have made for years, with external boots to keep road grime out of the seals. Paired with a 285mm two piece floating disc it is a proper step over the standard single piston sliding calipers without touching another thing on the car.
- £1,146.53 inc VAT
- Clears 15 inch wheels
- 285 x 24mm two piece floating discs
- Brackets and fitting hardware in the box, pads and hoses priced separately
- Made to order in up to 28 working days, five caliper colours
HiSpec 300mm and 310mm Billet 4: the 16 inch sweet spot
Most of the GTIs we get asked about are on 16s, and this is where the money goes furthest. Same Billet 4 caliper as the 285 kit, with a 300mm or 310mm disc behind it, both 28mm thick and both clearing a 16 inch wheel. The two sit about twenty pounds apart, so Garreth’s view is simple: take the 310 for the extra leverage unless a particular wheel says otherwise. Either way you get the same two piece floating disc construction as the kits three times the price.
- 300mm at £1,191.29, 310mm at £1,212.77, both inc VAT
- Both clear 16 inch wheels
- 28mm thick two piece floating discs
- Pads and hoses priced separately, so budget for both
- Made to order in up to 28 working days
Tarox 323mm 6 pot Sport: the complete kit
The Sport kit is where the Tarox range starts, and it is the easiest kit on this page to buy: everything is in the box, down to the braided hoses and the Corsa pads already sitting in the calipers. The B32 caliper carries six pistons, the 323mm disc is a two piece floater balanced to 0.05mm, and you pick the disc face and caliper colour when you order. It is listed per engine, so the 1.8T GTI, the 2.3 V5 and the R32 each get their own version at the same price with the right fitment for that car.
- £1,748.98 inc VAT, complete
- Corsa pads and braided hoses included and fitted
- Six piston B32 caliper, hand assembled in Italy
- 323 x 28mm two piece floating discs, balanced to 0.05mm
- Separate listings for GTI, V5 and R32

HiSpec 335mm Monster 4 and Monster 6: the 17 inch track build
Once the car is on 17s and doing track evenings, this is our HiSpec pick. The Monster runs larger pistons than the Billet 4 for more clamp and a firmer pedal, with high temperature seals and stainless wear plates for the abuse. The only decision is four pot or six, and for most Mk4s the four does the job; the six is for drivers who are genuinely hard on brakes or carrying serious power. Both hold the same 335mm disc that tucks under a 17 inch wheel.
- Monster 4 at £1,534.62, Monster 6 at £1,671.90, inc VAT
- Both clear 17 inch wheels
- 335 x 28mm two piece floating discs
- High temperature seals and stainless steel wear plates
- Pads and hoses priced separately
Tarox 340mm Super Sport: the flagship
For the R32, or a GTI pushing serious power, this is the one we would point you at. The B34GT is Tarox’s fast road and track flagship, running sequentially sized pistons so the pads wear evenly and the pedal stays consistent as everything gets hot. One word on names: the listing calls it the 10 pot, which is what the older B34 design ran; Tarox’s current B34GT uses eight sequentially sized pistons, and that is what arrives. Same philosophy as the Sport kit otherwise: hoses, brackets and fitted pads all in the box, listed per engine.
- £2,610.00 inc VAT, complete
- 340 x 26mm two piece floating discs
- Sequentially sized pistons for even pad wear
- Corsa pads and braided hoses included and fitted
- Separate listings for GTI, V5 and R32

If the car is on 18s
Above these sit two more kits. HiSpec’s 360mm Mega Monster is an eight piston caliper that needs an 18 inch wheel, and the 360mm version of the Tarox Super Sport is the biggest brake either brand lists for the Mk4. This is big power and show build territory, and at this end of the range we would always rather talk the build through with you first.

What is actually in each box
The headline prices sit further apart than the finished builds do. HiSpec price their kits without pads or braided hoses so you choose the compound; Tarox include both, with the pads already fitted. Spec the two level and the gap narrows, so compare the finished build, never the headline number.

Prices include VAT and were correct on 12 August 2026. Minimum wheel sizes are a property of the kit, not the car, so where we have given a figure it holds whatever you bolt it to. The other half of the question is depth, because the back of a spoke can sit close to a caliper even on a wheel of the right diameter, and that one we check per car.
Common questions
Will a kit fit behind my standard wheels?
On diameter, match the table above and you have your answer: 15 inch from 285mm, 16 inch from 300mm, 17 inch at 323mm and 335mm, and 18 inch from 340mm up. HiSpec and Tarox both state a figure per kit, and because that figure comes from the kit it holds whatever car the kit goes on. What is left to check is depth, since a spoke can foul a caliper on a wheel of exactly the right diameter, so tell us the make and model of your wheels and we will confirm that side of it.
Which Tarox listing do I order for my engine?
Tarox list the Mk4 by engine: 1.8T GTI, 2.3 V5 and R32, all at the same price for a given kit. Pick the one that matches your car so the brackets and offsets are right. If your Mk4 is a different engine, get in touch and we will confirm the correct fitment with Tarox before you spend anything.
Why are pads and hoses extra on the HiSpec kits?
HiSpec price the kit bare so you choose the pad compound to match how the car is used, a road pad for a daily and something more serious for track work. Both pads and braided hoses can be added to the order, and we will quote the finished build so you are comparing like for like against the Tarox kits.
How long before it arrives?
HiSpec kits are made to order in Dartford, allow up to 28 working days. Tarox kits are built for the specific car at the factory in Italy and lead times vary through the year, so ask when you order and we will give you the current picture.
Will these work with my ABS and ESP?
Tarox state full compatibility with ABS, ESP and modern driver aids on every Mk4 kit. For a HiSpec build, tell us the exact car and spec when you order and we will confirm the details with HiSpec before it is built.
What we would actually fit
On a standard car keeping its 15s, the 285mm Billet 4, and no second thoughts. On a 16 inch GTI that gets driven properly, Garreth’s money goes on the 310mm Billet 4 with a decent pad, and that would be his default answer for most of the Mk4s we get asked about. For track evenings on 17s it is the Monster 4, with the Monster 6 held back for the genuinely brake hungry. If you want one box with nothing left to add, the Tarox 323 Sport is the tidiest package here. And for an R32 the Super Sport 340 suits what that car is: quicker, heavier and worth doing properly.
If you are stuck between two of these, ring us on 0115 9893488 with your wheel size and what the car does at weekends. Working out what clears and what fouls is Cameron’s corner of the business, so have the wheel spec handy and you will get a straight answer, usually in about five minutes.
