Our Top Recommended Big Brake Upgrade Kits For Your Subaru Legacy
The Legacy is a heavier car than most of the hot hatches in this series, and the HiSpec range for it reflects that. There is no Billet 4 in the Legacy catalogue. Where other cars start at 285 or 300mm with a four-piston Billet caliper and work up to Monster, the Legacy starts at Monster: a caliper with a longer pad and more clamp area, built for cars that carry weight. That difference is worth knowing before you pick a kit, because every option on this page already represents the performance tier that most cars only reach at the top of their range.
This page runs through the kits Garreth and Cameron would actually fit to the car, from the two brands we use for big brake conversions: Tarox in northern Italy and HiSpec Motorsport in Dartford. Every kit here is a complete front axle conversion on the standard Legacy hubs. The full Subaru Legacy range is on the site if you want to compare everything at once.
- Every kit in this range is a Monster or Mega Monster caliper, starting at 315mm, because HiSpec have spec'd the Legacy from the performance tier up
- Wheel size decides the kit: 16 inch at 315mm all the way up to 19 inch at the 380mm Mega Monster
- Tarox kits include pads and hoses in the box, already fitted; HiSpec price theirs separately so you choose the compound
- The WRX badge appears on just one kit in this range, the 360mm Mega Monster; everything else is listed generically for the Legacy regardless of engine

Two brands, two ways of building a brake kit
Both companies machine their own calipers from billet aluminium and build each kit for the specific car. Where they differ is in how the box arrives.
Tarox
Made at the Tarox factory in northern Italy. Calipers are CNC machined from European billet alloy and hand assembled, discs are heat treated and hand balanced to 0.05mm. Every Legacy kit arrives with vehicle-specific braided hoses and Corsa pads already fitted, and Tarox state full compatibility with ABS and ESP.
HiSpec Motorsport
Machined in Dartford from 6082 T6 billet aluminium. Every kit is made to order in up to 28 working days, with calipers available in black, red, blue, gold or silver. Pads and braided hoses are priced separately, so you pick the compound that matches how the car is used.
Wheel sizes across the range
The Legacy catalogue covers 16 to 19 inch clearances, and the table below shows every kit. HiSpec publish their wheel sizes per kit on the listing. For Tarox, the minimum wheel diameter is listed on the Tarox website by kit code, and the two Legacy kits give different answers despite both being Sport specification: the 306mm clears 16 inches, the 315mm needs 17. That difference is what the price gap between them is about.
| Kit | Disc | Smallest wheel |
|---|---|---|
| HiSpec 315mm Monster 4 | 315mm | 16 inch |

HiSpec 315mm Monster 4: the entry kit
On most of the cars in this series the Monster 4 is the track pick: you work up to it from the Billet 4. On the Legacy it is where you start. The 315mm Monster 4 is the smallest kit HiSpec make for this car, and it already carries the longer pad and greater clamp force of the Monster family. It clears a 16 inch wheel, which covers a lot of standard Legacy specs, and it gives a genuine step over the standard sliding calipers without needing to change anything else on the car.

The 306mm Sport is the only Tarox kit in the Legacy catalogue that clears a 16 inch wheel. For anyone keeping standard rims or running 16-inch aftermarket, this is the Tarox option. It is worth knowing about the pricing before you order: the 306mm costs slightly more than the bigger 315mm Tarox Sport, which might look odd at first. The reason is wheel-size compatibility: the 315mm needs 17s, the 306mm does not. If the car is already on 17s, the 315mm below is the sharper buy. If it stays on 16s, this is the right kit.
In the box: braided hoses vehicle-specific, Corsa pads already fitted, B32 six-piston caliper hand assembled in Italy. On a car this size, the pads and hoses being pre-fitted and sorted is a reasonable reason to go Tarox over HiSpec at the same wheel size.
- £2,078.89 inc VAT
- Clears 16 inch wheels
- 306mm two-piece floating disc, balanced to 0.05mm
- B32 six-piston caliper, billet alloy, hand assembled
- Corsa pads and braided hoses included and fitted
- Black, red, blue, green or gold caliper finish
HiSpec 335mm Monster 4 and Monster 6: the 17-inch builds
On 17s and the car does regular track sessions, this is Cameron’s HiSpec pick. The 335mm Monster caliper runs on a disc 20mm bigger than the 315mm entry kit, which means more leverage and better heat management on a car that is already heavier than most in this range. The four-versus-six decision is a real one here: on a road Legacy the Monster 4 is enough; if track sessions are regular and pads are coming off warm, the Monster 6 adds clamp with the same disc and the price difference is not large. Both clear a 17 inch wheel.
- Monster 4 at £1,650.00 inc VAT, Monster 6 at £1,773.00 inc VAT
- Both clear 17 inch wheels
- 335mm two-piece floating disc
- Pads and hoses priced separately

Move to 17s and the 315mm Tarox Sport opens up, and Garreth’s view is this is the better Tarox buy for most Legacy owners on 17-inch rims. It is the same B32 six-piston caliper and the same pads-and-hoses-in-the-box setup as the 306mm, but the disc is 9mm bigger, the minimum wheel clearance goes to 17 inch, and it costs £33 less than the 306mm. A bigger kit at a lower price because the 17-inch requirement means fewer buyers can run it.
One title note: the 306mm listing says “306mm 6pot” and the 315mm says “315mm 6pot”, both correct. Both are the B32 caliper, both hand assembled at Tarox in northern Italy. The Corsa pads come fitted, the braided hoses are vehicle-specific and in the box. No extra parts to source.

HiSpec 380mm Mega Monster: the flagship
The 380mm Mega Monster is HiSpec’s largest caliper in the Legacy range. It uses a six-piston design with 70% more pad surface area than the Monster caliper, built for drivers who are genuinely hard on brakes or running the car in competition. It needs 19-inch wheels, so this is a specific pick for a car that is already on bigger rims. Two price points are worth knowing about at the Mega Monster level: the 380mm generic kit costs less than the 360mm WRX-specific kit in the section below, despite being the bigger disc. The WRX kits are dearer on today’s listings; the 380mm is the broader Legacy fitment.
If the car is on 18-inch wheels, the 360mm Monster and Mega Monster options are in the section below.
- £2,159.69 inc VAT
- Clears 19 inch wheels
- 380mm two-piece floating disc
- Mega Monster six-piston caliper, 70% more pad area than Monster
- Pads and hoses priced separately
- Made to order, five caliper colours

If the car is on 18s
Three 360mm kits fit behind an 18-inch wheel on the Legacy. The Monster 4 and Monster 6 are standard Legacy fitments; the Mega Monster is listed specifically for the WRX. If the car is a WRX and needs the biggest HiSpec option before the 380mm, this is the route. The WRX Mega Monster carries a price premium over the 380mm generic kit despite being the smaller disc, so the wheel-size requirement, not kit size, is what separates the two at the top of the range. Check your wheel diameter first.

What is actually in each box
The headline prices sit further apart than the finished builds do. HiSpec price their kits without pads or braided hoses, so you choose the compound to match how the car is used. Tarox include both, pads already fitted. Add pads and hoses to a HiSpec kit and the gap narrows, so compare the full build cost before deciding on price.

Prices include VAT and were correct on 18 August 2026. The Tarox 306mm Sport costs more than the Tarox 315mm Sport despite being the smaller disc. That is the live pricing on both listings, and we have flagged it internally because it reads like a keying error, so check both pages before you order. The HiSpec 360mm Mega Monster WRX costs more than the 380mm Mega Monster as well. Again, that is what the listings show today, and we have flagged the pair to be checked.
Common questions
Why does HiSpec start at Monster on the Legacy when other cars have a Billet 4 entry?
HiSpec spec the Legacy from Monster upward because it is a heavier, longer car than the typical hot hatch they list a Billet 4 for. The Monster caliper is designed for heavier road cars and carries a longer pad, more clamp force, and high-temperature seals that suit the weight and braking demands of the Legacy. If you want to cross-check, give Cameron a ring and he will confirm the recommended starting point for your specific car.
The Tarox 306mm costs more than the 315mm. Is that correct?
Yes, that is the live pricing. The 306mm Sport clears a 16-inch wheel; the 315mm needs 17s. That is the price on the page today, and we would sooner flag it than invent a reason for it. If the car is on 17s, the 315mm is the sharper buy. If it stays on 16s, the 306mm is the only Tarox option that fits.
The 380mm Mega Monster costs less than the 360mm WRX Mega Monster. Why?
The 360mm WRX kit is built for a specific bracket that fits the Legacy WRX, which is a lower-volume application than the generic Legacy fitment the 380mm covers. The WRX kits are the dearer pair on today’s listings. On a standard Legacy the 380mm is the better value at the top of the range; on a WRX the 360mm Mega Monster is the correct fitment for that spec.
Which kit fits both the standard Legacy and the WRX?
At the Monster level (315mm, 335mm, 360mm) the kits listed as Subaru Legacy fit across the range, no engine or model split. The WRX split only appears at the 360mm Mega Monster. Below that, pick by wheel size and the kit fits the car regardless of engine.
How long does it take and will it work with my ABS?
HiSpec kits are made to order in Dartford, allow up to 28 working days. Tarox kits are built for the specific car in Italy, lead times vary through the year so ask when you order. Tarox state full ABS and ESP compatibility. For HiSpec, tell us the exact car and spec and we will confirm with HiSpec before the build goes in.
What we would actually fit
On a standard Legacy keeping its 16-inch wheels, the 315mm HiSpec Monster 4, and we would add a good road pad and a set of HiSpec braided hoses to the order at the same time. On a car that is already on 17s and sees occasional track use, Garreth’s money goes on the 335mm Monster 4 or the Tarox 315mm Sport depending on whether you want to choose your own compound or just bolt it on. For a modified Legacy on 18s, the 360mm Monster 6 is the pick. The Mega Monsters are for cars built around the brakes, not bolted on as a first upgrade.
If you are stuck between two of these or need the fitment confirmed on a WRX, ring us on 0115 9893488. Wheel-clearance questions are Cameron’s corner of the business, so have the wheel make and size ready and you will get a straight answer.
