Our Top Recommended Big Brake Upgrade Kits For Your Subaru Impreza

Tell us your Impreza is a Turbo, a Turbo 2000, a WRX or a Sport and we can already tell you which brake kit fits, because on the classic Impreza they are all the same car underneath. Tarox list the kit four times over on the site, once per badge, so a search for any of those names lands on the right page. HiSpec do it the other way and cover the whole range under one listing marked WRX. Whichever badge is on the back of yours, it is the same kit.

Below are the kits we would actually fit, across the three brands we stock for big brakes: Tarox in northern Italy, HiSpec Motorsport in Dartford, and Brembo, built to order at the factory in Bergamo. The full Impreza range is on the site if you want to browse it raw.

  • Tarox list the same kit under four Impreza badges: Turbo, Turbo 2000, WRX and Sport. Buy under whichever one matches your logbook
  • HiSpec's 315mm kit clears a 16 inch wheel; Tarox's own 315mm kit needs a 17 inch wheel. Same disc size, different caliper, different minimum
  • Tarox and HiSpec kits include pads, braided hoses and brake fluid. Brembo kits include pads and braided lines; brake fluid is not listed separately
  • There is no Billet 4 kit for the Impreza. HiSpec's range here starts at the wider Monster 4 caliper

Three brands, three different ways to build a brake kit

All three machine their own calipers from billet aluminium and build every kit for the specific car. Where they differ is in how they list the Impreza and what the price buys.

Brembo

Built to order at the Brembo factory in Bergamo, Italy. GT calipers come in four families: GT-A two piece, GT-M monobloc, GT-S billet with nickel finish, and GT-R billet hard anodised. Pads and braided lines are in the box with every kit; hardware and brackets too. Six to eight weeks from order. Priced at five per cent under Brembo UK retail.

Tarox

Built at the factory in northern Italy. Calipers are CNC machined from European billet alloy and hand assembled, discs are heat treated and hand balanced to 0.05mm. Every kit arrives complete: vehicle specific braided hoses and Corsa pads already fitted. On the Impreza, Tarox list the same kit four times over, once per badge: Turbo, Turbo 2000, WRX and Sport.

HiSpec Motorsport

Machined in Dartford from aerospace grade billet aluminium, calipers and pistons both. Made to order in up to 28 working days, with the caliper finished in your choice of black, red, blue, gold or silver. HiSpec cover the whole classic Impreza range under one listing, marked WRX, and the kits include pads, hoses and fluid as standard.

Wheel sizes: the 315mm trap

Both brands publish a minimum wheel size for every Impreza kit, HiSpec on the listing itself and Tarox on their own site, looked up per kit for this guide, not assumed. The one that catches people out is the 315mm disc. HiSpec’s 315mm Monster kit is designed to clear a 16 inch wheel. Tarox’s own 315mm kit needs a 17 inch wheel. Same disc diameter, different figure, because the two calipers are a different shape and sit differently behind the spokes. A minimum wheel size belongs to the kit, never to the millimetres alone, and this is the clearest example we have seen of why.

HiSpec 315mm Monster 4: the way in

This is the smallest kit we would put on an Impreza, and the natural start point on 16 inch wheels. The Monster 4 is a four piston caliper machined from aerospace grade billet aluminium, with a pad a third bigger than HiSpec’s entry Billet 4 caliper elsewhere in the range, which the Impreza does not get as an option here. That bigger pad means more surface grip and better heat dissipation once the disc is doing real work. The kit arrives with EBC Redstuff pads, braided hoses and brake fluid all included, so there is nothing left to source separately.

  • £1,365.00 inc VAT, pads, hoses and fluid included
  • Fits behind 16 inch wheels
  • 315mm two piece disc, curved vane rotor
  • 4 piston Monster 4 caliper, aerospace grade billet aluminium
  • Five caliper colours, made to order in the UK, up to 28 working days

HiSpec 335mm Monster 4 and Monster 6: the 17 inch pair

Once the car is on 17 inch wheels, this is the natural step up, and HiSpec list it both ways. The Monster 4 keeps the four piston caliper from the 315mm kit behind a bigger 335mm disc for more leverage and more surface to shed heat into. The Monster 6 is the six piston version of the same caliper: same pad size, but up to 63 per cent more piston area, which means a firmer pedal and more consistent bite as the disc gets hot. Garreth’s read: the Monster 4 is plenty for a fast road Impreza, the Monster 6 earns its extra cost on a car that sees regular track days.

  • Monster 4 at £1,650.00, Monster 6 at £1,773.00, both inc VAT, both with pads, hoses and fluid included
  • Both fit behind 17 inch wheels
  • 335mm two piece disc, curved vane rotor
  • Monster 4 is 4 piston, Monster 6 is 6 piston with up to 63% more piston area
  • Five caliper colours, made to order in the UK, up to 28 working days

Tarox 315mm 6 pot Sport: the complete kit at 17 inch

Tarox list a smaller 306mm kit for the Impreza as well, and normally the smaller disc would be the cheaper one. Not here: the 306mm kit runs to £2,078.89 inc VAT, more than this 315mm kit at £2,045.00. We are not going to quietly point you at the dearer, smaller option, so if you are choosing between the two Tarox kits on price alone, the 315mm is the one to take, and it needs a 17 inch wheel, one size up from the 306mm’s 16 inch. The B32 caliper carries six pistons, the disc is a two piece floating design balanced to 0.05mm at the factory, and the kit arrives complete: braided hoses and Corsa pads already fitted.

  • £2,045.00 inc VAT, complete, cheaper than the smaller 306mm Tarox kit
  • Fits behind 17 inch wheels
  • Corsa pads and braided hoses included and fitted
  • B32, 6 piston caliper, hand assembled in Italy
  • 315mm two piece floating disc, balanced to 0.05mm

HiSpec 360mm Monster 4 and Monster 6: the 18 inch pair

The same choice as the 335mm pair, one size up, for cars on 18 inch wheels or heading that way. The 360mm disc is HiSpec’s largest Monster fitment for the Impreza, and the Monster 4 and Monster 6 calipers sit over it exactly as they do at 335mm: same pad, four or six pistons, the six piston version worth the extra outlay once the car is doing proper circuit work, not just fast road miles. Both include pads, hoses and fluid, same as every HiSpec kit on this page.

  • Monster 4 at £1,780.50, Monster 6 at £1,863.00, both inc VAT, both with pads, hoses and fluid included
  • Both fit behind 18 inch wheels
  • 360mm two piece disc, curved vane rotor
  • Monster 4 is 4 piston, Monster 6 is 6 piston
  • Five caliper colours, made to order in the UK, up to 28 working days

Tarox 340mm Super Sport: the flagship

The Super Sport is Tarox’s fast road and track flagship, and the largest kit they list for the standard Impreza fitment. The B34GT caliper uses sequentially sized pistons so the pads wear evenly across the face and the pedal stays consistent as things get hot. One note on the listing: the title says 10 pot. The kit contents and the caliper spec both say eight pistons, and that is what arrives. Minimum wheel is 18 inch. Pads, hoses and brackets are all in the box from Italy, same as the rest of the Tarox range.

  • £2,610.00 inc VAT, complete
  • Requires 18 inch wheels
  • Corsa pads and braided hoses included and fitted
  • B34GT caliper, 8 pistons despite the "10 pot" title, hand assembled in Italy
  • 340mm two piece floating disc, balanced to 0.05mm

Brembo GT for the Impreza: made to order in Italy

On the GD/GG Impreza (2002 to 2007), Brembo have four GT kits. The GT-A at £3,719.68 is the entry: a four piston two piece caliper on a 332mm disc. Disc face is cross-drilled or Type 3 slotted at the same price, and caliper colour is set by the part number you order, black, red or silver.

The GT-M steps up to a 350mm disc under a monobloc six piston caliper machined from one piece of aluminium, £4,191.18. A single-piece body holds its shape better under heat and repeated hard use than a two piece housing. Above that, the GT-S runs the same disc and piston count in billet with nickel finishing and racing-style piston radiators at £4,295.95. The GT-R at £8,329.97 is the top of the range: billet aluminium, hard anodised, with the same internal specification as Brembo competition hardware.

Every kit is built to order in Italy, six to eight weeks. Pads, braided lines and mounting hardware are all in the box.

Wheel clearance needs checking before the order goes in. The product page carries the A, B and C caliper clearance drawing for each kit. GT-R calipers have a different profile to the GT-M at the same disc diameter, so the drawing is per caliper family, not per disc size alone. Send Cameron the wheel make, size and offset and he will read it against the drawing before anything is confirmed.

If your car is a 1993 to 2001 GC/GF rather than a GD/GG, Brembo list a separate 328mm kit for that generation at £3,173.89 inc VAT.

  • GT-A entry: £3,719.68 inc VAT, 332mm disc, four piston two piece caliper
  • GT-M: £4,191.18 inc VAT, 350mm disc, six piston monobloc caliper
  • Cross-drilled or Type 3 slotted disc, same price; caliper colour set on order
  • Built to order in Italy, six to eight weeks; pads, braided lines and hardware in the box
  • GC/GF generation (1993 to 2001): separate 328mm kit at £3,173.89 inc VAT

The two biggest kits we stock for the Impreza

Both brands go one step further than the flagship picks above, still on an 18 inch wheel, for the Impreza that wants the largest kit either company builds for it. HiSpec’s Mega Monster is their flagship caliper full stop: six pistons, a pad 70 per cent bigger than the Monster range, on the same 360mm disc as the Monster kits above but with a lot more clamping force behind it. Braided hoses are optional on this one, not included, everything else HiSpec fit as standard. Tarox’s 360mm Grande Sport sits a tier above the Super Sport, a 360 x 30mm disc under a ten piston caliper, complete as always with pads and hoses fitted.

What is actually in each box

Most of this series compares HiSpec kits priced without pads or hoses against Tarox kits that include them. The Impreza is different: every Tarox and HiSpec kit on this page arrives with pads, braided hoses and brake fluid included. HiSpec’s Monster range specifically lists EBC Redstuff pads and two braided hoses as part of the kit, and only the Mega Monster leaves the hoses as an optional extra. Brembo kits include Brembo pads and braided lines; brake fluid is not listed separately. So on this car the finished-price comparison is already fair without any speccing up, and the real choice comes down to caliper family, disc size and how much you want to spend.

Common questions

My Impreza is badged Turbo, not WRX. Does this guide still apply?

Yes. Turbo, Turbo 2000, WRX and Sport are all the same classic Impreza generation, and both brands build one physical kit per disc size for it. Tarox list all four badge names separately so a search for your car's actual badge finds the kit; HiSpec cover the same car under a single WRX listing. Buy under whichever name is in front of you, it will fit.

Why does the 315mm HiSpec kit need a smaller wheel than the 315mm Tarox kit?

Same disc diameter, different caliper. HiSpec's Monster caliper and Tarox's B32 caliper are shaped differently and sit at a different distance from the back of the spokes, so the wheel that clears one will not automatically clear the other. Always check the minimum wheel for the specific kit, never assume it carries over from a same-sized disc on the other brand.

Why does the smaller Tarox kit cost more than the bigger one?

It genuinely does on the Impreza: the 306mm kit lists at £2,078.89 inc VAT against £2,045.00 for the 315mm. We are flagging it, not explaining it away. If you are choosing between the two on price, the 315mm is both bigger and cheaper.

Do I need to buy pads and hoses separately?

No, not on the Impreza. Every kit on this page includes pads and braided hoses. HiSpec throw in brake fluid too; the only exception is the Mega Monster where the hoses are an optional extra. Brembo kits include Brembo pads and braided lines; brake fluid is not listed separately.

How long before it arrives?

HiSpec kits are made to order in Dartford, allow up to 28 working days. Tarox kits are built for the specific car at the factory in Italy and lead times vary, so ask when you place the order. Brembo kits are six to eight weeks from the date of order, built to order in Bergamo.

What does the Brembo GT range offer over Tarox and HiSpec?

Brembo sit at a higher price point and do not overlap with Tarox or HiSpec. The GT-A entry at £3,719.68 is roughly 45 per cent dearer than the most expensive Tarox kit. What you get for the extra spend is Brembo's own caliper design, disc and pad all from the same manufacturer, and the same caliper families used in Brembo's motorsport division. If the car is going to a circuit regularly or the budget reaches, the GT-A is where to start. The GT-R at £8,329.97 is for track cars, not daily road use.

What we would actually fit

On 16 inch wheels, the HiSpec 315mm Monster 4 is our starting point, complete for £1,365.00 with nothing extra to buy. Stepping up to 17 inch, the Tarox 315mm 6 pot Sport is genuinely the better value of the two Tarox kits, bigger disc, lower price than the 306mm sitting next to it, so take that one over the smaller kit every time. If you want the HiSpec badge instead at 17 inch, the Monster 6 earns its money once the car sees track days; the Monster 4 is plenty for the road. On 18 inch wheels the Tarox 340mm Super Sport is our flagship recommendation, and for anyone wanting the outright biggest kit either brand builds for this car, the HiSpec Mega Monster or the Tarox 360mm Grande Sport are both there.

If the car is seeing regular track days or the budget stretches, the Brembo GT-A 332mm at £3,719.68 is worth the conversation. It is a significant step up in price from the Tarox and HiSpec options, and the wheel clearance needs confirming against the drawing before the order goes in, but for a car that does real circuit work the Brembo caliper family is built for that use. Ring us on 0115 9893488 with the wheel spec and we will tell you whether it clears.

For road use on a budget, start at the HiSpec 315mm Monster 4. For track days, the Brembo GT-A or, if the wheels clear, the GT-M 350mm. Ring us on 0115 9893488 with your wheel size and which badge is on the back of the car. Working out what clears and what fouls is Cameron’s corner of the business, so have the wheel spec handy and you will get a straight answer.
