Our Top Recommended Big Brake Upgrade Kits For Your Renault R5
The Renault 5 page splits into two eras of listing, and it is worth knowing which one you are looking at before you order. Three of the six HiSpec kits carry the newer HISC- part numbers and are built specifically for the GT Turbo. The other three are older listings that just say the kit will fit your Renault 5, no trim named. If the car in the garage is a standard R5, a Gordini or an Alpine, not the Turbo, those older listings are the safer starting point, and worth a call to us to confirm before ordering either way.
The two eras also pack a different box. The older HiSpec kits come with EBC pads and DOT 5.1 fluid already in the price, braided hoses optional. The newer HISC- kits price the caliper, disc and bracket only, with pads and hoses both added on top. That is why the headline prices sit closer together than the fitment story alone would suggest: add pads and fluid to a new kit and the gap to the equivalent old one narrows a long way. None of the ten kits on this page are cut for the mid-engined R5 Turbo, the rally homologation car with the engine behind the driver. That is a different car front to back, so ring us first if that is what you are fitting. The full R5 range is on the site if you want to browse it raw.
- HiSpec's three newest kits, the HISC- range, are built specifically for the GT Turbo; the three older listings just say "Renault 5" with no trim named
- Older HiSpec kits bundle EBC pads and DOT 5.1 fluid in the price; the newer HISC- kits price caliper, disc and bracket only
- All four Tarox kits are listed generically for "Renault R5", Corsa pads and braided hoses fitted in every one
- Nothing on this page needs more than 17 inch wheels
- The Tarox 330mm kit is titled 10pot on the site; the caliper Tarox actually build it with is an 8-piston B34GT/B360

Two brands, two ways of building a brake kit
Both companies machine their own calipers from billet aluminium and build each kit for the specific car. On the R5 page the difference comes down to fitment wording and what is in the box, and it is not the same split on both sides.
Tarox
Made at the Tarox factory in northern Italy. Calipers CNC machined from European billet alloy and hand assembled, each one tested before dispatch. Every disc is heat treated and balanced to 0.05mm. All four R5 kits are listed as one generic fitment, Corsa pads and braided hoses fitted at the factory. Full ABS and ESP compatibility stated on every kit.
HiSpec Motorsport
Machined in Dartford from 6082 T6 billet aluminium, calipers and pistons both. Made to order in up to 28 working days, calipers finished in your choice of black, red, blue, gold or silver. On this page the older listings bundle pads and fluid; the newest three, cut for the GT Turbo, price them separately.
One external link worth bookmarking for Tarox: their wheel clearance template is the definitive check for spoke depth once you have the minimum diameter sorted.
The number that decides it: your wheel size
On the R5 the range runs from 15 inch at the smallest kit to 17 inch at the biggest, so nothing here asks for an 18 inch wheel. Every HiSpec figure below matches what that kit’s own page states, and it also matches the wider HiSpec catalogue figure for that disc size, so there is no conflict to flag on this vehicle. The Tarox figures were looked up individually on tarox.co.uk against each kit’s own part code, not assumed from the disc size, because Tarox publish a genuinely different minimum for the same diameter on different cars.
| Kit | Disc | Smallest wheel |
|---|---|---|
| HiSpec 284mm Billet 4 1P (GT Turbo listing) | 284 x 22mm | 15 inch |
| HiSpec 285mm Billet 4 (Renault 5 listing) | 285mm | 15 inch |

HiSpec 284mm and 285mm Billet 4: the two ways into a 15 inch kit
Both kits use the same Billet 4 caliper and land on almost the same disc size, but they come from different eras of the R5 page. HISC-057 is the newer listing, built specifically for the GT Turbo, and HiSpec sell the caliper, disc and bracket only, pads and hoses both added at extra cost. The older listing is cheaper to look at but broader in scope: it just says it fits your Renault 5, and EBC pads and DOT 5.1 fluid are already in the price.
Which one is right depends on what you are starting with. If you already have pads and fluid you are happy with, or you want a specific compound from day one, the new HISC-057 kit leaves that choice open. If you would rather order one thing and have everything needed to bleed the brakes turn up in the box, the older kit does that, and its price already reflects it once you add the same items to the new one.
- £785.44 inc VAT (new HISC-057, GT Turbo specific, pads and hoses extra) or £1,254.00 inc VAT (older listing, fits "your Renault 5", EBC pads and DOT 5.1 fluid included)
- Both clear 15 inch wheels
- New kit: 284 x 22mm one piece disc; older kit: 285mm disc, earlier construction
- Add pads and fluid to the new kit before comparing the two on price
- Five caliper colours on both; made to order in Dartford, up to 28 working days

The same fitment and box story repeats one wheel size up. HISC-058 is the GT Turbo specific listing, caliper and disc only. The older 300mm kit fits your Renault 5 without naming a trim, and again bundles EBC pads and DOT 5.1 fluid into the price. Both use the Billet 4 caliper on a 300mm two piece disc and both clear 16 inch wheels.
Garreth’s steer here is the same logic as the 284mm pair: buy on fitment first, whichever car you actually have, then work out whether the finished cost favours the new kit plus pads and fluid, or the older kit as it stands. Ring us with the trim and we will put the finished numbers next to each other.
- £1,233.29 inc VAT (new HISC-058, GT Turbo specific, pads and hoses extra) or £1,464.00 inc VAT (older listing, fits "your Renault 5", EBC pads and DOT 5.1 fluid included)
- Both clear 16 inch wheels
- Billet 4 caliper on a 300mm two piece disc on both
- Older kit price already includes what the new kit prices as extras
- Five caliper colours on both; made to order in Dartford
Tarox 305mm Sport: the complete kit at 16 inch
Unlike the HiSpec side of this page, Tarox do not split the R5 by trim or by listing generation. All four of their kits are built for “Renault R5” as one fitment, and every one arrives with Corsa performance pads pre-installed and braided hoses in the box. The 305mm Sport is the 16 inch entry point: six piston billet caliper on a two piece disc balanced to 0.05mm.
If the appeal of this page is one delivery with nothing left to buy, this is where that starts. Full ABS and ESP compatibility is stated on the listing, and the kit clears a 16 inch wheel without needing anything bigger.
- £1,990.45 inc VAT, complete with Corsa pads and braided hoses fitted
- Clears 16 inch wheels
- 305mm two piece disc, balanced to 0.05mm
- Six piston billet caliper, hand assembled in Italy
- Listed for "Renault R5" as one fitment, no trim split unlike the HiSpec kits above

The Monster 4 uses larger pistons than the Billet 4, with high temperature EPDM seals and stainless steel wear plates for a caliper that holds up better to repeated heat cycles. On most cars in this series stepping up to a Monster caliper also means stepping up a wheel size. Not here: the Monster 4 sits on a 284mm two piece disc, 28mm thick against the entry kit’s 22mm, and it still clears a 15 inch wheel.
That makes it the pick for a GT Turbo that sees the odd track day but is staying on its standard wheel size. It is the newer GT Turbo specific listing, so pads and braided hoses are priced separately, same as the other HISC- kits on this page.
- £1,365.65 inc VAT, GT Turbo specific listing, pads and hoses extra
- Clears 15 inch wheels, same as the entry Billet 4 kit
- 284 x 28mm two piece disc, 6mm thicker than the Billet 4's
- High temperature EPDM seals and stainless steel wear plates
- The only kit on this page that steps up the caliper without asking for a bigger wheel
Tarox 330mm Super Sport: the flagship, eight piston despite the title
The biggest kit on the R5 page, and the one where the listing needs a correction before we quote it. The title on site reads 10pot. Tarox’s own specification for this caliper, the B34GT/B360, is an 8-piston design, and that is the figure we would give a customer on the phone. Everything else on the listing checks out: two piece disc balanced to 0.05mm, Corsa pads fitted at the factory, braided hoses in the box.
Like the rest of the Tarox range on this page, it is listed for “Renault R5” as one fitment, so there is no trim question to work through before ordering, only the wheel size.
- £2,365.30 inc VAT, complete with Corsa pads and braided hoses fitted
- Clears 17 inch wheels
- 330 x 26mm two piece disc, balanced to 0.05mm
- Site title says 10pot; the B34GT/B360 caliper Tarox actually fit is 8-piston
- Listed for "Renault R5" as one fitment, same as the other Tarox kits here

Three more from the range
Three kits round out the page. The Tarox 284mm Sport Compact is the smallest Tarox kit here, a four or six piston caliper on a single piece cast disc, clearing a 15 inch wheel at £1,981.04 inc VAT with Corsa pads and hoses fitted, the compact route into the Tarox line for anyone who wants the complete-kit approach without going to the 305mm. The Tarox 318mm Sport sits between the 305mm and the 330mm flagship, a six piston caliper on an 18mm bigger disc, needing a 17 inch wheel at £2,020.00 inc VAT. The older HiSpec 325mm Billet 4 is the biggest kit on the HiSpec side of the page, fits your Renault 5 without naming a trim, EBC pads and DOT 5.1 fluid included, clearing 17 inch wheels at £1,470.00 inc VAT.

What is actually in each box
On most cars in this series the pattern is simple: HiSpec exclude pads and hoses, Tarox include them. The R5 page complicates that a little, because HiSpec’s own answer depends on which listing you are looking at. The three older kits bundle pads and fluid, the three newest do not. Tarox stay consistent across all four of their kits: pads and hoses fitted every time.

Common questions
My R5 is not a GT Turbo. Which kits should I be looking at?
Start with the three older HiSpec listings, the 285mm, 300mm and 325mm Billet 4 kits. They are worded to fit your Renault 5 without naming a specific trim, which is the safer starting point for a standard R5, a Gordini or an Alpine. The four Tarox kits are also listed generically as Renault R5, not GT Turbo specific. Ring us on 0115 9893488 with the exact model and we will confirm fitment before anything is ordered.
What is actually different between the old and new HiSpec kits?
Two things: what the listing says it fits, and what is in the box. The three newer HISC- kits are built specifically for the GT Turbo and price the caliper, disc and bracket only, with pads and braided hoses both added separately. The three older kits fit your Renault 5 generically and already include EBC pads and DOT 5.1 fluid in the price, with braided hoses optional. Compare the finished cost, not the headline number.
Is the Tarox 330mm kit an 8 piston or a 10 piston caliper?
Eight. The website title on this listing says 10pot, but Tarox's own specification names the caliper as a B34GT/B360, which is an 8-piston design. We would quote 8 piston to a customer on the phone and are flagging the title for correction.
Do any of these kits fit the mid-engined Renault 5 Turbo?
No. The rally homologation R5 Turbo, with the engine moved behind the driver, is a different car front to back from the front-engined R5 and GT Turbo that every kit on this page is built for. If that is what is in your garage, ring us on 0115 9893488 before ordering and we will check what is actually possible.
Will these kits work with ABS and ESP on the R5 GT Turbo?
Tarox state full ABS and ESP compatibility on all four of their R5 kits. HiSpec's conversion fits to the front hub and does not touch the ABS sensor or reluctor ring, so compatibility on a standard car should be fine. If your car has had any non-standard ABS work done, tell us when you order and we will check with HiSpec before the kit goes to build.
What we would actually fit
Get the trim sorted first. If the car is a GT Turbo, the new HISC- kits are built specifically for it, so start there and add pads and hoses to the price before comparing anything else. If it is a standard R5, Gordini or Alpine, the older listings are the ones we would point you at, and they already have pads and fluid in the price.
On 15s keeping the standard wheel, Garreth’s money goes on the Monster 4: more caliper for a modest step up in price, and it does not ask for a bigger wheel to fit. For one delivery with nothing left to add, the Tarox 305mm at 16 inch does the whole job, pads and hoses included. The Tarox 330mm is the flagship for a GT Turbo doing proper track work, and we will quote it as the 8-piston kit it actually is, not the 10pot the title suggests.
Call Cameron on 0115 9893488 with which R5 you have and your current wheel size, and he will work out whether an old or new HiSpec listing applies before anything gets ordered.
