Our Top Recommended Big Brake Upgrade Kits For Your Renault Clio MK1
Most guides in this series ladder up in even steps: a 15 inch pick, a 16 inch pick, then more choice as the wheels get bigger. The Clio MK1 catalogue does not read that way. Once you get past 16 inch, five of the eleven kits on this page, three from HiSpec and two from Tarox, all sit at exactly the same 17 inch minimum. Below that, 15 inch and 16 inch each get one clean HiSpec pick and one complete Tarox kit and nothing else. On a 17 inch Clio there is no sizing decision left to make, only a choice between five kits at the same wheel size.
One correction before anything else. Our own listing calls the biggest Tarox kit here a “330mm 10pot”, but Tarox’s own build sheet gives the caliper code as B34GT/B360, an eight piston design. We would say so here before you compare kits by piston count. The full Clio MK1 range is on the site if you want to see it all at once.
- Every kit on this page converts the front axle: calipers, discs, brackets and fitting hardware for the Clio MK1
- Five of the eleven kits on this page, three HiSpec and two Tarox, all need the same 17 inch minimum wheel
- 15 inch and 16 inch each get one HiSpec pick and one complete Tarox kit, nothing more
- The Tarox "330mm 10pot" is actually an 8 piston caliper on Tarox's own build sheet, code B34GT/B360
- Tarox kits arrive with Corsa pads and braided hoses fitted; HiSpec price those separately

Two brands, two ways of building a brake kit
Both companies machine their own calipers from billet aluminium and build each kit for the specific car. The difference comes down to two things: what is in the box, and where the work is done.
Tarox
Made at the Tarox factory in northern Italy. Calipers CNC machined from European billet alloy and hand assembled, each one tested before dispatch. Every disc is heat treated, CNC faced and hand balanced to 0.05mm. Every kit on this page arrives with Corsa pads pre-installed and vehicle-specific braided hoses in the box. Compatible with ABS, ESP and modern driver aids.
HiSpec Motorsport
Machined in Dartford from 6082 T6 billet aluminium, calipers and pistons both. Every kit is made to order in up to 28 working days, calipers finished in your choice of black, red, blue, gold or silver. Pads and braided hoses are priced separately so you choose the compound for the way the car is used.
One external link worth bookmarking for Tarox: their wheel clearance template is the definitive check for spoke depth once you have the minimum diameter sorted.
The number that decides it: your wheel size
A bigger disc means a bigger minimum wheel, and on the Clio MK1 nothing runs past 17 inch. HiSpec publish their wheel size from their own catalogue. The Tarox figures come from tarox.co.uk, looked up against each kit’s own part code, because Tarox’s minimum wheel size is a property of the specific kit, not a fixed rule for a given disc diameter.

HiSpec 284mm Billet 4: the 15 inch starting point
If the car is on 15 inch wheels and you want to keep them, this is the pick. The Billet 4 is HiSpec’s most popular caliper: four pistons machined from 6082 T6 billet aluminium with external boots on the seals to keep road grit out. This is the newer of two HiSpec listings we carry around this disc size, built on a one piece 284mm disc, and it is the one we would actually order.
We also still list an older 285mm Billet 4 kit for this car. Same caliper family, one piece disc, and it prices roughly £470 higher than this 284mm listing for what looks like the same job. We have not pulled the older listing, but we would point a buyer at the 284mm kit below every time until that gap is explained.
- £785.44 inc VAT
- Clears 15 inch wheels
- 284mm one piece disc, 22mm thick
- Pads and hoses priced separately; five caliper colours
- Made to order in up to 28 working days in Dartford
Tarox 284mm Sport Compact: the complete kit at 15 inch
-
Tarox 284/285mm 6 pot compact conversion kits, Renault Clio MK1 Brake Kits
£1,981.04 Incl. VAT£1,650.87 Excl. VAT Select options
The entry Tarox for the Clio MK1, and the easiest buy on this page if you want the whole job done in one delivery. Sport Compact packs the full Tarox experience into a compact package built around a single piece cast disc, heat treated the same as the rest of the range. Clears 15 inch wheels, the same as the HiSpec pick above.
Corsa pads are fitted at the factory and braided hoses are in the box, so there is nothing left to add before the kit goes on the car. It costs more than the HiSpec 284mm kit up front, but the finished-build comparison is closer once you price pads and hoses onto the HiSpec side.
- £1,981.04 inc VAT, complete with pads and braided hoses fitted
- Clears 15 inch wheels
- 284mm single piece disc, heat treated
- Billet caliper, hand assembled in Italy
- Compatible with ABS, ESP and modern driver aids
HiSpec 300mm Billet 4: the 16 inch move
Same Billet 4 caliper as the 284mm kit, stepped up to a 300mm two piece disc for cars on 16 inch wheels. This is the newer 2P listing for this disc size, and Garreth’s answer for most Clio MK1s on 16s that are not seeing regular track use.
As with the 284mm pick, we also carry an older 300mm Billet 4 listing that runs roughly £230 higher for what reads as the same caliper and disc size. We would order the kit below, not the older one, until that price gap has an explanation.
- £1,233.29 inc VAT
- Clears 16 inch wheels
- 300mm two piece floating disc, 22mm thick
- Pads and hoses priced separately; five caliper colours
- Made to order in up to 28 working days
Tarox 305mm Sport: the complete kit at 16 inch
-
Tarox 305/306mm 6 pot sport conversion kits, Renault Clio MK1 Brake Kits
£1,990.45 Incl. VAT£1,658.71 Excl. VAT Select options
Six piston caliper on a 305mm two piece disc, balanced to 0.05mm, Corsa pads already fitted and braided hoses in the box. Clears 16 inch wheels and, like every Tarox kit on this page, arrives ready to fit with nothing extra to order.
This is the kit we would put forward for a Clio MK1 owner who wants one delivery and nothing left on the shopping list. It costs more than the HiSpec 300mm kit up front, and less once you add pads and hoses to the HiSpec side.
- £1,990.45 inc VAT, complete with pads and braided hoses fitted
- Clears 16 inch wheels
- 305mm two piece disc, balanced to 0.05mm
- Six piston billet caliper, hand assembled in Italy
- Compatible with ABS, ESP and modern driver aids
HiSpec 335mm Monster 4 and Monster 6: the 17 inch track build
The Monster caliper uses larger pistons than the Billet 4 with a longer pad and more surface area. Both the Monster 4 and Monster 6 sit on a 335mm two piece disc and both clear a 17 inch wheel. The choice between four pot and six pot is about use.
For a road car that sees a few track days a year the Monster 4 is what Cameron fits. The Monster 6 is for a Clio doing proper circuit work or carrying more power than standard, and the extra piston area rewards a harder-wearing pad. This is one of three HiSpec kits on this page that all need the same 17 inch wheel, alongside the 325mm Billet 4 below.
- Monster 4 at £1,650.00 inc VAT; Monster 6 at £1,773.00 inc VAT
- Both clear 17 inch wheels
- 335mm two piece floating discs
- Pads and hoses priced separately; five caliper colours
- Made to order in up to 28 working days

More at 17 inch
Three more kits share the same 17 inch minimum as the Monster pair above. Once you are past 16 inch on this car, this is where most of the range sits. The HiSpec 325mm Billet 4 is the biggest Billet 4 caliper offered for this car. The Tarox 318mm Sport is the mid-size Tarox, complete with pads and hoses. The Tarox 330mm Super Sport is the flagship, an eight piston caliper despite our own listing calling it a 10pot, also complete with pads and hoses fitted.

What is actually in each box
The headline prices sit further apart than the finished builds do once you spec them level. Add pads and braided hoses to the HiSpec side and the gap with the Tarox kits narrows. Compare finished builds, not the headline numbers.

Prices include VAT and were correct on 16 August 2026. Two older HiSpec listings for this car, a 285mm and a 300mm Billet 4, are not included above; see the note under the 15 and 16 inch picks.
Common questions
Is the Tarox 330mm kit really a 10 piston caliper?
No, and our own product title is wrong on this one. Tarox's own part code for this kit is B34GT/B360, an eight piston caliper with sequential bore sizing for even pad contact. It is the number Tarox build to, so it is the number we would quote if you are comparing kits by piston count.
Why do three different HiSpec kits all clear the same 17 inch wheel?
The 325mm Billet 4 and the 335mm Monster 4 and Monster 6 are three different calipers on two different disc sizes, but all three land at the same 17 inch minimum. That is simply how the sizes fall on this car. If you are on 17s already, the choice between them comes down to caliper type and how the car is used, not wheel clearance, since all three clear the same wheel.
I see two HiSpec listings around 285mm and two around 300mm. Which is right?
We carry both an older and a newer listing at each of those disc sizes for this car, and the newer ones (284mm 1P and 300mm 2P) are the ones we would order. The older listings price noticeably higher for what reads as the same caliper and disc, and we have not pulled them from the site. Ring us on 0115 9893488 and we will confirm the exact spec before you order either one.
Why are pads and hoses extra on the HiSpec kits?
HiSpec price their kits without pads or hoses so you choose the compound. A street pad and a track pad are very different things, and the right choice depends on how and where the car is used. Both pads and braided hoses can be added when you order, and we will put the finished build price together so you are comparing like for like against the Tarox kits, which build both into the price as standard.
Will these kits work with ABS and ESP on the Clio MK1?
Tarox state compatibility with ABS, ESP and modern driver aids on all Clio MK1 kits. HiSpec's kits fit to the front hub and do not touch the ABS sensor or reluctor ring, so compatibility on a standard car should be fine. If your Clio has had any non-standard ABS work done, tell us when you order and we will check with HiSpec before the kit goes to build.
What we would actually fit
On a road car keeping its 15 inch wheels, the HiSpec 284mm Billet 4 is the straightforward choice. If you want the whole job done in one delivery at the same wheel size, the Tarox 284mm Sport Compact is the pick, Corsa pads and hoses fitted and nothing left to add. On 16s, Garreth’s money goes on the Tarox 305mm Sport for the same reason: one delivery, nothing outstanding.
Once you are on 17s there is more to choose from, not less, since five kits on this page all clear the same wheel. For a road car with the odd track day, the Monster 4 is what Cameron fits as the default. For anything doing proper circuit work, the Monster 6 or the Tarox 318mm Sport are the step up, and the Tarox 330mm Super Sport, eight piston despite the title, is the flagship if you want the biggest kit we sell for this car.
Ring us on 0115 9893488 with the current wheel size and what the car does at weekends. Checking spoke clearance on a specific wheel is Cameron’s side of the business, and it is usually a short call.
