Our Top Recommended Big Brake Upgrade Kits For Your Porsche 996 and 997 911

The first question Cameron asks on any 996 or 997 brake enquiry is whether the car has PCCB. Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes were a factory option across a range of 996 and 997 variants and the answer matters before anything else is discussed. Cars with PCCB need a disc-only upgrade: Brembo make matched carbon-ceramic discs for PCCB calipers, priced from around £1,938 to £2,462 inc VAT depending on the disc size. A full caliper conversion kit will not fit a car that left the factory with PCCB calipers.

Cars without PCCB are the subject of this page. The Brembo range covers the 996 and 997 with a genuine technology ladder from the GT-A two-piece 4-piston caliper up to the GT-R hard-anodised billet flagship. Tarox and HiSpec Motorsport do not list a front big brake kit for the water-cooled 996 or 997. The Tarox kit labelled as a 911 kit on their site covers the air-cooled 3.0 SC generation from 1977 to 1983, not this car.

One further split to be aware of: Brembo catalogue the 996/997 range by generation (997.1 versus 997.2) and by drivetrain (C2 rear-wheel drive versus C4 all-wheel drive). The entry point for a C4 is the GT-A two-piece 4-piston; C2 models step straight to the GT-M monobloc 6-piston. The full 997 range and 996 range are on the site.

  • PCCB cars need disc-only kits (from approx. £1,938 inc VAT), not caliper conversions
  • Tarox and HiSpec do not list for the water-cooled 996 or 997
  • Brembo catalogues separately by generation (997.1/997.2) and drivetrain (C2/C4)
  • All kits on this page are made to order in Italy at six to eight weeks

Check for PCCB before orderingPCCB variants include the GT3 (all years), GT3 RS, GT2, GT2 RS, 997 Turbo S and some GTS models. Some Turbo and Carrera 4S variants also left the factory with PCCB as an option. The caliper is ceramic-composite coloured, typically yellow, and the disc edge is visible at the wheel spoke. If there is any doubt, Cameron can confirm from the VIN before anything is ordered: call 0115 9893488.

Brembo on the Porsche 996 and 997 911

Brembo is the only brand in our range with a front big brake kit for the water-cooled 996 and 997. Tarox and HiSpec do not currently list for this car. The Tarox reference KMPO0951-911 that appears in some listings is a kit for the air-cooled 911 3.0 Carrera SC built between 1977 and 1983. It does not fit the 996 or 997.

What the Brembo range gives you on the 996 and 997 is a proper technology ladder. The families in ascending order are the GT-A (two-piece caliper body and bracket, lightest, easiest install), the GT-M (monobloc, machined from one piece of aluminium), the GT-S (billet aluminium, nickel finished, the same manufacturing approach Brembo uses on its competition calipers) and the GT-R (billet, hard anodised, laser-engraved logo). All are 6 piston except the GT-A which is 4 piston.

Brembo GT Series

Made to order at the Brembo factory in Italy. Caliper families in ascending order: GT-A (two-piece, 4 piston, lightest and easiest to fit), GT-M (monobloc, machined from one piece of aluminium, 6 piston), GT-S (billet aluminium, nickel finished, 6 piston) and GT-R (billet, hard anodised, 6 piston). Discs come cross-drilled or Type 3 slotted at the same price. Caliper colour is set by the last digit of the part number and costs nothing extra.

UK

Tarox and HiSpec

Tarox and HiSpec Motorsport do not currently list a front big brake kit for the water-cooled Porsche 996 or 997. The Tarox KMPO0951 kit covers the air-cooled 911 SC and Carrera (1977 to 1983), which uses a completely different front hub. If either brand adds cover for the water-cooled 996 or 997, we will update this page.

One point on the 997 catalogue: Brembo sometimes share a bracket across variants because the front hub geometry is genuinely the same. A listing that covers two or more 997 variants at the same price is shared hardware, not a cataloguing shortcut. The same logic applies to some 997 variants. Where a listing covers multiple models, it is because the bracket fits both. Cameron can confirm which listing applies to your exact build before you order: call 0115 9893488.

Wheel clearance

Brembo publish a caliper clearance drawing for most kits in the GT range, and the product page links to it. The drawing gives three measurements: A (caliper height), B (caliper depth from the disc face to the wheel mounting surface) and C (caliper width). These are the numbers that determine whether a given wheel fits, not just the disc diameter on its own.

The 997 is not unusual here: larger calipers take more space behind the wheel face and the depth dimension is the one that catches owners out most often. A GT-R caliper at 380mm does not share its clearance drawing with a GT-S at the same disc size; they are different envelopes. If you are choosing between two kits at the same disc diameter, check the right drawing for each. The wheel-size module does not cover Brembo GT kits, which is why we link the drawings from the product page directly.

Clearance drawings are on each product pageIf you are running aftermarket wheels, tell Cameron the make, model and offset when you call on 0115 9893488 and he will work through the caliper dimensions against your wheel spec before anything is ordered.

GT-A 355mm: the 997.1 C4 entry point

The GT-A is Brembo’s two-piece caliper design: the caliper body and the bracket are two separate alloy castings bolted together, derived from Brembo’s original equipment production work. For the 997.1 C4 front hub, this is where the Brembo catalogue starts.

At £3,719.68 inc VAT, it is the most affordable front Brembo on this page. The GT-A is 4 piston, which is a step below the 6-piston GT-M that C2 owners access from the same price range. The reason is the C4 front hub geometry: Brembo’s C4-specific bracket was developed for the all-wheel-drive front axle, and the GT-A is the kit they specify at the entry point for it.

The 996 C4 has its own Brembo listings in the 996 range at similar pricing. If the car is a 996 C4, Cameron can confirm the right part number from your VIN on 0115 9893488. All kits are made to order in Italy: six to eight weeks from order.

  • £3,719.68 inc VAT
  • 997.1 C4 (all-wheel drive) front hub
  • 355mm two-piece disc
  • GT-A two-piece caliper, 4 piston
  • Cross-drilled or Type 3 slotted disc, same price
  • Made to order: six to eight weeks

GT-M 355mm: the 997.2 C2 entry point

C2 models (rear-wheel drive) skip the GT-A and go straight to the GT-M. The GT-M is a monobloc caliper: the entire body is machined from one piece of aluminium, which gives it a stiffer structure under hard use than a two-piece design. Brembo spec the GT-M for road cars that see regular track days.

For the 997.2 C2 (the 2008 to 2012 facelift generation), the 355mm GT-M is the starting point at £4,295.95 inc VAT. Six piston, with Brembo’s characteristic racing-style port layout. The disc is 355mm and two-piece. The C2 RWD listing covers the standard Carrera models from the 997.2 generation.

If the car is a 997.1 C2 (2004 to 2008, the pre-facelift) and not a 997.2, the applicable starting kit differs. Cameron can confirm the right listing for your build year from 0115 9893488. Six to eight weeks, made to order.

  • £4,295.95 inc VAT
  • 997.2 C2 (rear-wheel drive) front hub
  • 355mm two-piece disc
  • GT-M monobloc caliper, 6 piston
  • Cross-drilled or Type 3 slotted disc, same price
  • Made to order: six to eight weeks

GT-M 380mm: the bigger disc for the 997.2 C2

Moving from 355mm to 380mm on the GT-M costs £366.73 and adds 25mm of swept area with more thermal mass for repeated heavy braking. The caliper stays GT-M throughout: the same monobloc aluminium construction and 6-piston layout. The difference between this and the GT-M 355mm above is entirely in the disc.

At £4,662.68 inc VAT, this is Garreth’s preferred starting point for a 997.2 C2 that sees circuit use. On road-only use the 355mm is sufficient. The extra disc mass shows on repeated hard laps, where the 380mm stays cooler across successive braking zones. That is the value of the step up, not outright stopping power from a single stop.

The 380mm clearance drawing on the product page is different from the 355mm drawing. Check yours before ordering, particularly if you are running aftermarket wheels. Ring Cameron on 0115 9893488 if you need the dimensions confirmed against your wheel spec before committing.

  • £4,662.68 inc VAT
  • 997.2 C2 (rear-wheel drive) front hub
  • 380mm two-piece disc
  • GT-M monobloc caliper, 6 piston
  • Cross-drilled or Type 3 slotted disc, same price
  • Made to order: six to eight weeks

GT-S 380mm: billet for the 997.1 C2

The GT-S is a step up from the GT-M in caliper technology. Where the GT-M is cast monobloc, the GT-S is machined from billet aluminium: a solid block is cut to shape rather than being cast. Billet starts with a denser material than casting aluminium, and the GT-S carries racing-style piston radiators and recessed dust seals, the same specification Brembo uses on its Formula 1 calipers.

For the 997.1 C2 (pre-facelift, 2004 to 2008), the GT-S 380mm is the kit Brembo list at this price point. At £4,767.47 inc VAT it is £104.79 more than the GT-M 380mm for the 997.2 C2 above, and that difference buys you the step from cast monobloc to billet aluminium.

The nickel finish on the GT-S carries Brembo’s standard warranty. Caliper colour is set at order by the last digit of the part number. If you have a 997.2 C2 and want the billet caliper technology, there is a GT-S listing for that generation too; ring on 0115 9893488 and Cameron will confirm the right part number from your build year.

  • £4,767.47 inc VAT
  • 997.1 C2 (rear-wheel drive, pre-facelift) front hub
  • 380mm two-piece disc
  • GT-S billet aluminium caliper, nickel finished, 6 piston
  • Cross-drilled or Type 3 slotted disc, same price
  • Made to order: six to eight weeks

GT-R 380mm: the top of the range

The GT-R 380mm for the 997.2 C2 is listed at £8,906.26 inc VAT. That is roughly double the GT-M 380mm for the same car and close to double the GT-S 380mm for the 997.1 C2.

The GT-R caliper is billet machined and hard anodised, Brembo’s highest-specification surface treatment in the GT range. Racing-style piston radiators, recessed dust seals and a laser-engraved Brembo logo filled red, as on their competition calipers. It is 6 piston and runs the 380mm two-piece disc.

Garreth’s view: the GT-S at 380mm does the job on any fast road and track car at roughly half the price. The GT-R is the answer for an owner who competes, wants the definitive specification, and whose use justifies the investment. The clearance drawing for the GT-R is different from the GT-S at the same disc size: the envelope dimensions are not the same caliper, so check the right drawing on the product page.

GT-R listings exist for both the 997.1 and 997.2 C2 generations; the 997.2 C2 listing is in the widget below. Cameron can confirm the correct listing for your build year and carry out a clearance check against your wheels before ordering: call 0115 9893488.

Common questions

How do I know if my 996 or 997 has PCCB?

PCCB (Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes) was a factory option on the 996 GT3, 997 GT3, GT3 RS, GT2, GT2 RS, Turbo S and some GTS and Carrera 4S variants. It was also available as a cost option on standard Carreras. The easiest visual check is the caliper colour: PCCB calipers are typically bright yellow and the disc edge is visibly different from a cast iron disc when looked at through the wheel spoke. If there is any uncertainty at all, Cameron can confirm from the VIN on 0115 9893488 before any order is placed. Fitting a caliper conversion kit to a PCCB-equipped car is not a fit: the caliper bracket geometry is different and the kit will not go on correctly.

Is the 996 covered by the same kits as the 997?

The 996 has its own Brembo listings in our range and they are listed separately in the 996 product category. The 996 front hub geometry is similar to the 997 but Brembo catalogue them separately, so the part numbers are specific to each generation. The kits on this page are verified for the 997. Ring Cameron on 0115 9893488 with your 996 build year and variant and he will confirm the correct 996 part number from the Brembo catalogue before ordering.

Why does the C4 get a GT-A when the C2 starts at a GT-M?

The C4 all-wheel-drive front hub has a different geometry from the C2 rear-wheel-drive front hub. Brembo catalogue the two hub types separately and specify a different bracket for each. The C4 bracket is designed around the GT-A two-piece caliper at the 355mm entry point. The C2 bracket at the same disc size supports the GT-M monobloc, which is a step higher in the caliper technology ladder. It is a hardware fit question, not a performance tiering decision.

What is the difference between the 997.1 and 997.2 in terms of kits?

The 997.1 (2004 to 2008) and 997.2 (2008 to 2012) use the same front hub architecture but Brembo list separate part numbers for each generation, partly because the 997.2 facelift came with revised front caliper brackets on some variants. The practical difference on this page: the GT-M 355mm and GT-M 380mm picks are 997.2 C2 specific; the GT-S 380mm pick is 997.1 C2 specific. GT-R listings exist for both generations. Confirm your exact build year with Cameron on 0115 9893488 and he will point you to the right part number from the Brembo catalogue.

Do I need different wheels?

Brembo publish a caliper clearance drawing for each GT kit and the product page links to it. The drawing gives three measurements: caliper height, depth from the disc face to the wheel mounting surface, and caliper width. The depth dimension is the one most likely to catch you out with aftermarket wheels on a 997. Tell Cameron the wheel make, model and offset when you call on 0115 9893488 and he will run through the clearance dimensions against your wheel spec before ordering anything. The GT-R caliper at 380mm needs a different clearance check from the GT-S at the same size: they are different calipers with different envelopes.

How long does a Brembo kit take to arrive?

Six to eight weeks from order is Brembo's current lead time for made-to-order GT kits built in Italy. The precise figure can vary through the year. Ask when you call on 0115 9893488 and we will give you the current picture before you commit. Brembo GT kits are not shelf stock: each one is built to the colour and disc face specification you choose at order.

What we would actually fit

For a 997.2 C2 on road with occasional track days, the GT-M 380mm at £4,662.68. It is the step above the 355mm entry at £366.73 extra, and the larger disc gives the thermal headroom that makes the difference on a circuit day without being over-specified for road use. If the budget is the priority, the GT-M 355mm at £4,295.95 is the right starting point and you can step up later.

For a 997.1 C2, the GT-S 380mm at £4,767.47 is the natural choice if you want billet aluminium over cast monobloc. The billet step is meaningful on a car that sees hard use, and the nickel finish holds up well to repeated heat cycles.

For a 997.1 C4, the GT-A 355mm at £3,719.68 is the correct kit for the all-wheel-drive front hub. There is no GT-M listing for the C4 at this entry point, so the GT-A is the right starting kit for that geometry.

The GT-R at £8,906.26 is the definitive specification for the owner who competes or wants the top-of-range kit and whose use of the car justifies the investment. On a fast road car that sees track days, the GT-S gives the same stopping power at half the price.

Ring us on 0115 9893488 before ordering and Cameron will confirm the clearance drawing against your wheels, check the right part number for your build year and variant, and verify current lead time. Everything on this page is six to eight weeks, made to order in Italy.
