Our Top Recommended Big Brake Upgrade Kits For Your Citroen BX

Cameron built this page from the Tarox BX catalogue and the first distinction worth understanding is the disc construction. The 284mm Sport Compact runs a single-piece cast disc on the compact B280/B30 caliper, sized to fit behind 15 inch wheels. Every other kit from 305mm upwards uses a two-piece floating disc on the larger B32 caliper. Two-piece floating discs handle heat better under repeated braking, which matters on a car that tends to get used on track.

The other thing to know before you start: all five kits on this page are listed specifically for the BX GTI 16V. If your BX is not the 16V, ring Cameron first. HiSpec Motorsport and Brembo do not currently list a big brake kit for the BX, so everything here is Tarox. The full BX range is on the site if you want to look at it directly.

One pricing note worth flagging: the 284mm Sport Compact at £1,997.16 inc VAT costs more than the 305mm Sport at £1,860.66, despite being the smaller kit with the simpler disc construction. We will explain it in each section.

  • All five kits are for the BX GTI 16V only
  • 284mm Sport Compact: single-piece disc, B280/B30 caliper, fits 15 inch wheels
  • 305mm to 340mm: two-piece floating discs, B32 or B34GT caliper, 16 inch minimum upwards
  • All kits include Corsa pads pre-installed and vehicle-specific braided hoses
  • HiSpec and Brembo do not list kits for the Citroen BX

Tarox on the BX

Neither HiSpec Motorsport nor Brembo currently list a big brake kit for the Citroen BX, so the whole range on this page is Tarox. That covers five kits from 284mm on 15 inch wheels up to 340mm on 17 inch wheels, with four price points and two distinct disc constructions.

HiSpec and Brembo

Neither brand currently lists a big brake kit for the Citroen BX. If that changes we will update this page. For other Citroens in the range, check the site for what is available.

One thing to understand about how the BX range is split: the 284mm Sport Compact is a different caliper family from the 305mm and above. The B280/B30 is a compact unit built to clear smaller wheels; the B32 is the full-size Sport caliper used across the 305mm, 318mm and 330mm kits. At the top of the range the B34GT steps up again with eight sequentially sized pistons for even pad wear. We will cover each in its section.

The wheel size each kit needs

Every Tarox kit needs a wheel of the right diameter to clear the caliper. The 284mm Sport Compact fits behind 15 inch wheels. The 305mm steps up to 16 inch. The 318mm, 330mm and 340mm all share the same 17 inch minimum, so moving from the 318mm to the 330mm or 340mm does not require a wheel change.

Spoke clearance is Cameron's checkA 17 inch wheel passes the diameter test, but if the spokes sit close to the disc face you can still get a foul. Tell Cameron the make, model and offset of your wheels and he will confirm clearance before anything goes to order. That check takes five minutes.

Tarox 284mm Sport Compact: the 15 inch kit

The Sport Compact is the only kit in the BX range that fits behind 15 inch wheels, and it is also the only one using a single-piece cast disc. The B280/B30 caliper is a 6-piston compact unit built for tighter wheel clearances. The disc itself is 284mm and cast in one piece, unlike the two-piece floating discs used on every kit from 305mm upwards. It still gives a meaningful upgrade over the OEM setup.

One thing worth knowing on price: at £1,997.16 inc VAT, this kit costs £136.50 more than the 305mm Sport below it in the range. If your BX is already on 16 inch wheels, the 305mm is a better buy: bigger disc, two-piece construction, and £136.50 less. The 284mm is the answer for anyone who wants to stay on 15s, or where wheel clearance is tight.

  • £1,997.16 inc VAT
  • Fits behind 15 inch wheels
  • 284 x 21mm single-piece cast disc
  • B280/B30 6-piston caliper
  • GTI 16V listing only
  • Corsa pads and braided hoses included and fitted

Tarox 305mm Sport: the value entry at 16 inch

This is the cheapest kit in the BX range at £1,860.66 inc VAT, and it is the one Garreth would point most GTI 16V owners at. The B32 is Tarox’s full-size 6-piston Sport caliper. The 305mm disc is a two-piece floater: billet steel rotor, anodised alloy bell, balanced to 0.05mm. Everything arrives in the box: hoses, pads, brackets and hardware.

The price point is worth noting again: this costs less than the smaller 284mm Sport Compact above it, despite running the bigger two-piece disc and the larger caliper. For anyone already on 16 inch wheels, this is the obvious starting point.

  • £1,860.66 inc VAT
  • Clears 16 inch wheels
  • 305 x 26mm two-piece floating disc
  • B32 6-piston caliper, five anodised colours
  • GTI 16V listing only
  • Corsa pads and braided hoses included and fitted

Tarox 318mm Sport: the 17 inch sweet spot

The 318mm Sport is the kit Cameron calls the sweet spot on this car. Same B32 6-piston caliper and two-piece floating disc construction as the 305mm, but 13mm more disc diameter for £159 more at £2,020.00 inc VAT. The bigger swept area gives more thermal mass for repeated braking, which matters on a car taken to track days.

One practical point: the 318mm, 330mm and 340mm all share the same 17 inch minimum wheel size. Moving from the 318mm to either larger kit costs more but does not require a wheel change, which is worth factoring in if the budget allows a stretch.

  • £2,020.00 inc VAT
  • Clears 17 inch wheels
  • 318 x 26mm two-piece floating disc
  • B32 6-piston caliper, five anodised colours
  • GTI 16V listing only
  • Corsa pads and braided hoses included and fitted

Tarox 330mm Sport: the track pick on 17 inch

For a GTI 16V that sees circuit days, this is where the upgrade starts to make a real difference. The 330mm disc sits 12mm wider than the 318mm and still clears 17 inch wheels, giving a bigger swept area and more thermal mass under repeated heavy braking. Same B32 caliper as the 318mm, same two-piece floating construction.

At £2,280.00 inc VAT it is a £260 step over the 318mm. For a fast road car that does not see tracks, the 318mm gives almost the same result for less money. For anyone doing regular track evenings, the extra disc diameter earns its cost on the cool-down lap.

  • £2,280.00 inc VAT
  • Clears 17 inch wheels
  • 330 x 26mm two-piece floating disc
  • B32 6-piston caliper, five anodised colours
  • GTI 16V listing only
  • Corsa pads and braided hoses included and fitted

Tarox 340mm Super Sport: the flagship

The biggest kit in the BX range and the one with the B34GT caliper. The B34GT runs sequentially sized pistons, so they get larger from the leading edge to the trailing edge of the caliper. That gives even pad contact across the face as the disc heats and expands, and it is the correct hardware for a car running serious power or doing regular circuit sessions.

One thing on the name: the product listing calls this the 10pot, which is the older B34 designation that used ten pistons. The current B34GT in this kit uses eight sequentially sized pistons, and the product description confirms it. The principle is the same; the current parts count is eight. £2,670.00 inc VAT, complete with hoses, Corsa pads and all hardware.

  • £2,670.00 inc VAT

What is actually in each box

Every Tarox kit on this page is a complete front axle conversion. All five kits include: billet caliper, mounting brackets, all fitting hardware, vehicle-specific stainless steel braided hoses, and Tarox Corsa performance pads pre-installed. The disc construction differs: the 284mm Sport Compact uses a single-piece cast disc; the 305mm to 340mm kits all use two-piece floating discs with billet steel rotors and anodised alloy bells, balanced to 0.05mm. You pick caliper colour and disc face style when you order.

Both are for the GTI 16V; the difference is disc construction (single-piece versus two-piece) and caliper family (B280/B30 versus B32). The 284mm is the answer for 15 inch wheels; the 305mm is the better buy if you are on 16s.

Common questions

Are all five kits for the standard BX or only the GTI 16V?

All five kits on this page are listed specifically for the BX GTI 16V. The GTI 16V ran a different front hub from the lower-spec BX models. If your car is not the 16V, ring Cameron on 0115 647 8650 and he will check whether anything fits before you order.

Why does the 284mm cost more than the 305mm?

The 284mm Sport Compact and the 305mm Sport use different caliper families. The B280/B30 is a compact 6-piston unit designed to clear smaller wheels; the B32 is a larger caliper that is more expensive to produce but sits in a different pricing band in the Tarox catalogue. The result is that the smaller kit with the simpler single-piece disc comes out more expensive. If you are on 16 inch wheels, the 305mm is the better buy at £136 less.

Does the 340mm actually have 10 pistons?

No. The listing carries the old B34 name, which used ten pistons. The current B34GT in this kit uses eight sequentially sized pistons, and the product description confirms it. Sequentially sized means the pistons step up in diameter from the leading to the trailing edge of the caliper, giving even pad contact as the disc heats and expands. The principle is the same as the older design; the piston count is eight.

Do the 318mm, 330mm and 340mm all need different wheel sizes?

No. All three share the same 17 inch minimum wheel requirement. Moving from the 318mm to the 330mm or 340mm does not require a wheel change, which is worth knowing if you are weighing up whether the step in price is justified.

Will these kits work with ABS?

Tarox state full compatibility with ABS and ESP on all kits listed here. For a modified car or an unusual wheel and tyre setup, tell Cameron the details when you call and we will confirm with Tarox before anything is ordered.

How long before a kit arrives?

Tarox kits are built to order at the factory in Italy. Lead times vary through the year; ask when you call on 0115 647 8650 and we will give you the current picture from Tarox before you commit.

What we would actually fit

On a GTI 16V running 16 inch wheels, the 305mm Sport. It is the cheapest kit in the range, it runs the full two-piece floating disc construction, and it costs less than the smaller 284mm Sport Compact. On a car already on 17s, the 318mm Sport is the obvious call: more disc, same caliper, and the same wheel size works for the 330mm and 340mm too if you decide to go further later. Garreth would not argue with anyone who went straight to the 330mm on a car that sees track days, because the extra swept area at that disc size pays back quickly under repeated braking. The 340mm Super Sport is for the owner who wants the best available or has a GTI 16V that has been pushed hard in power and braking terms.
