Our Top Recommended Big Brake Upgrade Kits For Your Porsche Boxster and Cayman

The full Brembo Gran Turismo range is available for the Porsche Boxster and Cayman, which is not true of every car on this site. GT-A, GT-M, GT-S and GT-R are all listed, plus rear kits for the 981.1 generation. The catch is that not every variant gets every option: standard Boxster models (non-S) skip the GT-A and GT-M; those two sit behind the S, Spyder and Cayman R variants only.

Neither Tarox nor HiSpec list a kit for any version of the Boxster or Cayman, checked across all four shop categories covering 986, 987 and 981.1 generations. Every kit on this page is Brembo Gran Turismo: made to order in Italy, six to eight weeks, complete with pads and braided hoses. The full Porsche Boxster brake kit range is on the site for the complete catalogue.

  • Three generations covered: 986 (1996-2004), 987 (2005-2011) and 981.1 (2012-2016)
  • 986 and 987 S/Spyder: GT-A (4 pot), GT-M (6 pot), GT-S (6 pot), GT-R (6 pot), all at 355mm front
  • 987 Boxster standard (non-S): GT-S and GT-R only at 355mm; GT-S and GT-R at 380mm for the Spyder and GTS
  • 981.1: GT-M, GT-S and GT-R at 350mm or 355mm front; Spyder and GTS get 380mm option
  • PCCB cars (factory ceramic brakes): separate disc-only kit, not a full caliper conversion
  • All kits made to order in Italy: six to eight weeks from order to dispatch
  • Rear kits available for 981.1 Boxster and Cayman at 345mm
Porsche 987 Boxster on track with Brembo big brake upgrade kit
The Porsche 987 Boxster. Four caliper families, three generations, and the standard versus S split all affect which kit goes on your car.

Generations and caliper families

Three generations of Boxster and Cayman are in the catalogue: 986 (1996 to 2004), 987 (2005 to 2011) and 981.1 (2012 to 2016). Brembo list different options for each, and within each generation the S and standard variants are often treated differently.

986

986: 1996-2004

Boxster and Boxster S only (no Cayman generation). S variant: GT-A, GT-M, GT-S and GT-R at 355mm front. Standard Boxster non-S: GT-S and GT-R only at 355mm. No 350mm or 380mm option for the 986.

987

987: 2005-2011

Boxster, Boxster S, Boxster Spyder; Cayman, Cayman S, Cayman R. S, Spyder and Cayman R: full GT-A through GT-R range at 355mm. Standard Boxster non-S: GT-S and GT-R at 355mm or 380mm. PCCB cars in this generation have a separate disc-only kit.

981

981.1: 2012-2016

Boxster, Boxster S, Boxster GTS, Boxster Spyder; Cayman, Cayman S, Cayman GTS. Standard and S: GT-M, GT-S and GT-R at 350mm (Type 3 slotted only) or 355mm. Spyder and GTS: 380mm option. Rear kits at 345mm for this generation. PCCB disc-only kit listed.

Cayman kits share the same brackets as Boxster kits of the same generation; Brembo list them separately because the wheel arch and hub geometry is slightly different, so always pick the listing that names your car.

PCCB: the ceramic brake check

PCCB stands for Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes. It was a cost option on higher-spec 987 and 981.1 models, and the yellow or gold calipers are the giveaway: standard Boxsters and Caymans ship with silver or black calipers. PCCB calipers are much larger than the standard units and they are not removed for a Brembo full conversion.

If your car has PCCB, Brembo do not list a full caliper conversion for it. They list a disc-only kit instead: Brembo performance discs that fit behind the original PCCB calipers, replacing the ceramic discs with cast iron ones. This gives more predictable pad bite and a wider choice of pad compounds. The disc-only kit is a different product from the full conversion kits on the rest of this page.

The caliper colour test is the simplest check. Yellow calipers with a large body: PCCB. Silver, black or red standard calipers: not PCCB, and any full conversion kit on this page applies. If you are not sure, the original spec sheet or the Porsche build certificate will confirm it; Cameron can also help if you have the registration and VIN.

PCCB cars need the disc-only kit, not a full caliper conversionThe PCCB caliper is fixed to the hub differently and sized for a much larger disc than the Brembo conversion bracket allows. Ordering a full GT conversion for a PCCB car will not fit. If in doubt, call us on 0115 9893488 before ordering.

Wheel clearance

Each Brembo product page includes a caliper clearance PDF as a download link. That drawing shows the minimum internal wheel diameter and spoke-to-disc-face clearance for the kit on that specific Porsche application. Brembo do not publish a simple minimum wheel size for this range, because the offset and spoke depth of the wheel you run both affect whether it clears.

Factory Porsche alloys from the 986, 987 and 981.1 generations are designed to work with these kits. Aftermarket wheels with a deep concave profile or an unusual offset need confirming first. Drop us an email or click to open a chat with the wheel make, model and offset, and Cameron will check the drawing before anything is built in Italy.

350mm kits for the 981.1 are Type 3 slotted onlyBrembo do not offer the 350x34mm disc in cross-drilled for this application. If you want the choice between cross-drilled and Type 3 slotted, the 355mm kit for the 981.1 has both options at the same price.

GT-A 355mm: the first step for 986 and 987 S variants

The GT-A is the entry point in the Brembo Gran Turismo range and it is listed for the 986 Boxster S, 987 Boxster S, 987 Boxster Spyder, 987 Cayman S and 987 Cayman R. It is a four-piston two-piece caliper, which means the caliper body is split across the disc face. Brembo developed this design from their OEM automotive applications: it is lighter than a monobloc and meets Porsche’s packaging requirements for these generations.

At £4,463.62 inc VAT it is the most accessible point in the full-caliper Brembo range for these cars. The disc is 355x32mm two-piece floating. Pads and braided hoses are included. Caliper colour is a choice at no extra cost. Made to order in Italy, six to eight weeks. If you have a standard non-S 986 or 987 Boxster, this kit is not listed for your car; the guide covers GT-S and GT-R below, which are.

  • £4,463.62 inc VAT, complete
  • 355x32mm 2-piece floating disc; cross-drilled or Type 3 slotted
  • GT-A 4-piston 2-piece cast caliper
  • For 986 Boxster S, 987 Boxster S/Spyder, 987 Cayman S and Cayman R only
  • Pads and braided hoses included
  • Made to order in Italy: six to eight weeks
  • Clearance PDF on the product page

GT-M 355mm: monobloc six-piston for 986 and 987

The GT-M costs £5,155.14 inc VAT and replaces the four-piston GT-A caliper with a monobloc six-piston unit. Monobloc means the caliper body is machined from a single piece of aluminium with no bridge bolt: it holds its shape better under sustained heat and hard use than a two-piece caliper. Brembo’s own spec note on these kits is that the monobloc is the right caliper for road cars that see regular track days.

The disc stays at 355x32mm, so the wheel clearance picture is the same as the GT-A. This kit is listed for the 986 Boxster S and the 987 Boxster S and Spyder, excluding PCCB. If you have a standard non-S 987 Boxster and want a monobloc six-piston kit, the 981.1 version at 350mm (pick three below) is relevant only if you own a 981.1; for the older cars, the GT-S and GT-R at six pistons are the options.

  • £5,155.14 inc VAT, complete
  • 355x32mm 2-piece floating disc; cross-drilled or Type 3 slotted
  • GT-M 6-piston monobloc caliper; caliper colour choice
  • For 986 Boxster S and 987 Boxster S/Spyder (excl PCCB)
  • Pads and braided hoses included
  • Made to order in Italy: six to eight weeks
  • Clearance PDF on the product page

GT-M 350mm: the entry monobloc for the 981.1

The 981.1 generation opens up a second disc size: 350x34mm, two millimetres thicker than the 355mm disc. At £5,029.42 inc VAT the GT-M 350mm is the lowest-priced six-piston kit for the 981.1 Boxster and Cayman (excluding PCCB). The monobloc caliper is the same construction as the 986/987 version: single piece aluminium, no bridge bolt, designed for road use with regular track days.

One thing to note: the 350mm disc for the 981.1 is Type 3 slotted only. Brembo do not list the 350x34mm in cross-drilled for this application. If you want cross-drilled or if the choice matters for how the car looks behind the wheel, the 355mm kit for the 981.1 (covered in pick four, GT-S) has both options at the same price.

  • £5,029.42 inc VAT, complete
  • 350x34mm 2-piece floating disc; Type 3 slotted only (no cross-drill option at this size)
  • GT-M 6-piston monobloc caliper; caliper colour choice
  • For 981.1 Boxster and Cayman, all variants (excl PCCB)
  • Pads and braided hoses included
  • Made to order in Italy: six to eight weeks
  • Clearance PDF on the product page

GT-S 355mm: billet and nickel across all three generations

The GT-S costs £5,280.89 inc VAT and is listed for the 986 Boxster S, 987 Boxster S, Boxster Spyder, standard 987 Boxster, and the 981.1 generation in both 355mm and 350mm sizes. The caliper is machined from billet aluminium and given a nickel finish, using the same approach Brembo applies to its Formula 1 and NASCAR calipers. Racing-style piston radiators sit behind the pad faces to pull heat out of the fluid during repeated hard braking.

At this price point the GT-S is the kit Garreth would point most Boxster and Cayman owners at. It covers a wider range of variants than the GT-A or GT-M, the billet construction holds up better at sustained track temperatures, and the £225 gap between it and the GT-M is easy to justify if the car does regular circuit work. This is also the kit that opens up the cross-drilled option for 981.1 owners who want it: the 981.1 GT-S lists both disc faces at the same price, where the 350mm GT-M does not.

  • £5,280.89 inc VAT, complete
  • 355x32mm 2-piece floating disc; cross-drilled or Type 3 slotted
  • GT-S 6-piston billet aluminium, nickel finished, with racing piston radiators
  • Available for 986 S, 987 (standard and S/Spyder) and 981.1 Boxster and Cayman
  • Pads and braided hoses included
  • Made to order in Italy: six to eight weeks
  • Clearance PDF on the product page

GT-R: the flagship, billet and hard anodised

The GT-R sits at the top of the Brembo Gran Turismo range for the Boxster and Cayman. For the 981.1 generation the price is £8,329.97 inc VAT at 350mm or 355mm front disc; for the 987 at the standard 355mm disc the price is similar. The caliper is billet aluminium with hard anodising, which gives a surface that is more resistant to corrosion and abrasion than standard anodising. Brembo engrave the GT-R logo in red through the anodised layer, the same presentation as on their competition calipers.

The case for the GT-R over the GT-S is straightforward if the car is built around the Brembo flagship: it is the correct choice and the finish suits a car where nothing is compromised. If the car does regular track evenings rather than a dedicated circuit season, the GT-S at £5,280.89 is the more rational stopping point. The GT-R costs roughly 57 percent more for the caliper finish and construction; the thermal capacity at the disc is the same 355x32mm two-piece floating unit.

  • £8,329.97 inc VAT (981.1 at 350mm or 355mm); similar price for 987 variants
  • 350x34mm or 355x32mm 2-piece floating disc (depending on variant); cross-drilled or Type 3 slotted
  • GT-R 6-piston billet caliper, hard anodised; red engraved logo
  • Available for 981.1 Boxster and Cayman (excl PCCB) and selected 987 variants
  • Pads and braided hoses included
  • Made to order in Italy: six to eight weeks
  • Clearance PDF on the product page

Spyder, GTS and rear kits

The 987 Boxster Spyder and GTS, and the 981.1 Boxster Spyder and GTS, have a 380mm front kit available in GT-S and GT-R. This is a larger disc than the standard 355mm option and suits a car that sees sustained hard use on circuit. The 380mm kit is not listed for standard or S variants; it applies to the Spyder and GTS specifically.

For the 981.1 Boxster and Cayman, Brembo also list rear kits at 345x28mm in GT-M (£3,929.23 inc VAT), GT-S (£4,034.00 inc VAT) and GT-R (£7,439.34 inc VAT). Rear kits are four-piston for all three families. Rear upgrade products listed below are for the 981.1 Boxster; equivalent Cayman rear kits are in the same shop categories. If you are planning a rear upgrade alongside a front kit, let Cameron know when ordering so the balance is specced together.

Common questions

Do Tarox or HiSpec make a kit for the Boxster or Cayman?

No. We checked all four shop categories covering 986, 987 and 981.1 variants, plus a site-wide name search. Neither Tarox nor HiSpec list a kit for any generation or variant of the Boxster or Cayman. Every kit on this page is Brembo Gran Turismo.

I have a standard 987 Boxster (not the S). Which kits apply?

GT-S and GT-R at 355mm cover the standard 987 Boxster. The GT-A and GT-M are listed only for the 987 Boxster S and Spyder. If the car does track days and budget allows, the GT-S at £5,280.89 is Garreth's recommendation; it covers the wider variant range and the billet caliper handles sustained heat better than the GT-A at a lower price point.

My car has PCCB (yellow calipers). What kit can I fit?

The full caliper conversion kits on this page will not fit a PCCB car. Brembo list a disc-only kit for PCCB applications: this replaces the ceramic discs with cast iron Brembo GT discs while keeping the factory PCCB calipers. Contact us to confirm the correct product for your specific car before ordering.

What is the difference between the 350mm and 355mm kit for the 981.1?

The 350x34mm disc is 5mm smaller in diameter and 2mm thicker than the 355x32mm disc. The thicker disc gives more thermal mass. The 350mm option is Type 3 slotted only; the 355mm option has cross-drilled or Type 3 slotted at the same price. If the disc finish choice matters to you, pick the 355mm. If a slightly thicker disc appeals for circuit use, the 350mm GT-M at £5,029.42 is the entry point for that spec.

Are rear kits available for the 986 and 987?

No. The rear kits in this catalogue are listed for the 981.1 generation only at 345mm. For 986 and 987 rear upgrades, contact us and we will check what Brembo can supply for your specific variant, as the listing coverage changes over time.

Will these kits work with my ABS and traction control?

Yes. The front caliper conversion kits replace the caliper and disc while keeping the standard wheel speed sensors and hub geometry. Brembo state full ABS and stability control compatibility on these kits. If the car has any modified ABS configuration, confirm with us before ordering.

What caliper colours are available?

Brembo list a colour choice at no extra cost for all GT caliper families: typically black, silver, yellow and red. The exact colour options are listed on each product page. Select the colour when you add to basket.

How long is the lead time?

Six to eight weeks. All kits on this page are made to order at Brembo's factory in Curno, northern Italy. Nothing here is off the shelf. If timing is tight, tell Cameron when you enquire and we will confirm the current lead time before you commit to an order.

What we would actually fit

On a 987 Boxster S or Cayman S, Garreth’s starting point is the GT-S 355mm at £5,280.89. The billet caliper with nickel finish is the right unit for a car that does regular track days, the six to eight week wait is the main thing to plan around, and the GT-S covers a wider range of 987 variants than either the GT-A or GT-M. If budget is the first question and the car is used gently, the GT-A at £4,463.62 works; the four-piston two-piece caliper is the entry Brembo and it does the job on a road car.

On the 981.1, the GT-M 350mm at £5,029.42 is a solid starting point for a road car that does occasional track evenings. The monobloc construction is the right caliper for that kind of use. For regular circuit work, the GT-S 355mm at £5,280.89 has the edge: billet construction, the cross-drilled option if you want it, and it covers all 981.1 variants. The GT-R at £8,329.97 is the correct choice if the car is built around Brembo’s flagship; for most 981.1 owners the GT-S is the rational stopping point.

On the PCCB question: check the caliper colour before ordering. It is the one thing that changes everything else on this page. Cameron handles fitment queries across all three generations; ring us on 0115 9893488 or drop us an email with the car details and he will confirm the right kit before anything goes to order in Italy.
