Our Top Recommended Big Brake Upgrade Kits For Your Renault Clio MK2

Renault sold two different cars under the Clio MK2 badge. There was the everyday 1.2 to 1.6, and there was Clio Sport, the 172 and 182, built to a different brief entirely. Tarox treat that split as real: their whole Clio MK2 range is cut in two, one set of part codes for the standard car and a separate set for the RS, and at the 305mm disc size both versions cost exactly the same and look almost identical on the page. Order the wrong one and the mounting bracket will not sit right, so telling us which Clio you have matters before anything else on this page.

HiSpec do not draw that line. Every HiSpec kit on this page is listed once, “will fit your Renault Clio Mk2”, RS or standard, no separate code either way. There is a second catch before you shop the price alone: four of the five HiSpec kits here are older conversion-kit listings that already have an EBC pad, DOT 5.1 fluid and braided hoses built into the price. Only the newest kit, the RS132-6 race caliper, prices pads and hoses as extras, which is the pattern you would expect from the rest of the HiSpec range. The full Clio MK2 range is on the site if you want to see it all at once.

  • Every kit on this page converts the front axle: calipers, discs, brackets and fitting hardware for the Clio MK2
  • Tarox split the range by trim, standard Clio versus Clio RS 172/182, sometimes at the same disc size and price under a different code
  • HiSpec run one generic "Renault Clio Mk2" listing per disc size, no RS split
  • Four of the five HiSpec kits here already include EBC pads and braided hoses; only the newest, the RS132-6, prices them separately
  • Nothing on this page needs more than 17 inch wheels

Two brands, two ways of building a brake kit

Both companies machine their own calipers from billet aluminium and build each kit for the specific car. The difference on the Clio MK2 comes down to how each brand treats the two versions of the car, and what is actually in the box.

Tarox

Made at the Tarox factory in northern Italy. Calipers CNC machined from European billet alloy and hand assembled, each one tested before dispatch. Every disc is heat treated and balanced to 0.05mm. Every Sport and Super Sport kit on this page arrives with Corsa pads already fitted and vehicle-specific braided hoses in the box. Full ABS and ESP compatibility stated on every Clio MK2 kit.

UK

HiSpec Motorsport

Machined in Dartford from 6082 T6 billet aluminium, calipers and pistons both. Every kit is made to order in up to 28 working days, calipers finished in your choice of black, red, blue, gold or silver. Most of the range for this car already bundles an EBC pad and braided hoses as standard, the newest listing is the exception.

One external link worth bookmarking for Tarox: their wheel clearance template is the definitive check for spoke depth once you have the minimum diameter sorted.

The number that decides it: your wheel size

A bigger disc means a bigger minimum wheel, and on the Clio MK2 nothing runs past 17 inch. HiSpec publish their wheel size from their own catalogue. The Tarox figures come from tarox.co.uk, looked up against each kit’s own part code instead of read off a generic page for this car, because Tarox’s minimum wheel size is a property of the specific kit, not a fixed rule for a given disc diameter.

Diameter is the starting point, not the full answerTwo 16 inch wheels can be very different profiles behind the spokes, and clearance lives in that gap. If you are on aftermarket alloys, give Cameron the wheel make and model along with the size and he will check spoke clearance before anything is ordered. Five minutes on the phone before the kit is built saves a lot of effort afterwards.

HiSpec 285mm Billet 4: the 15 inch starting point

If the car is on 15 inch wheels and you want to keep them, this is the pick, and it fits either version of the Clio MK2, standard or RS. The Billet 4 is HiSpec’s most popular caliper, four pistons machined from 6082 T6 billet aluminium with integral dust seals to keep road grit out. On a 285mm disc it is a proper step over the standard setup and still clears a 15 inch wheel.

This is one of the older HiSpec listings, so the price already covers an EBC Standard Road pad and DOT 5.1 fluid, with braided hoses listed as an optional add. Bear that in mind against the Tarox kits, which build hoses into the price as standard instead of offering them as an option.

  • £1,254.00 inc VAT
  • Clears 15 inch wheels
  • 285mm two piece discs
  • EBC Standard Road pads and DOT 5.1 fluid included; braided hoses optional
  • Fits standard and RS Clio MK2 on the same part; made to order in up to 28 working days

HiSpec 300mm Billet 4: the 16 inch move

  • ,

    £1,220.00 Excl. VAT Select options

Same Billet 4 caliper as the 285mm kit, same construction, stepped up to a 300mm disc. If the car is already on 16 inch wheels, or you are choosing wheels for the build, this is where the Billet 4 range gets to before HiSpec ask for a bigger caliper. Garreth’s answer for most Clios on 16s that are not seeing regular track use.

Like the 285mm kit, the price here already includes an EBC pad and DOT fluid, with braided hoses as an optional extra. Fits standard and RS Clios on the same listing.

  • £1,464.00 inc VAT
  • Clears 16 inch wheels
  • 300mm two piece discs
  • EBC Standard Road pads and DOT 5.1 fluid included; braided hoses optional
  • Made to order in up to 28 working days

Tarox 305mm Sport: the same disc, sold two ways

This is the clearest example of the trim split on this page. Two listings, same 305mm disc, same six piston caliper, same price, and the only difference between them is which Clio they are cut for. One is built for the standard 1.2 to 1.6 Clio MK2, the other for the RS 172/182. Both arrive complete with Corsa pads fitted and braided hoses in the box, both clear a 16 inch wheel.

Order by what is actually badged on the back of the car. If you are not certain which Clio you have, tell us the registration and we will confirm before anything ships. It is a five minute check and it is free; getting it wrong is not.

  • £1,990.45 inc VAT, either version
  • Clears 16 inch wheels
  • 305mm two piece discs, balanced to 0.05mm
  • Six piston billet calipers, hand assembled in Italy, Corsa pads and braided hoses included
  • Standard Clio and Clio RS versions listed separately at the same price

HiSpec 335mm Monster 4 and Monster 6: the 17 inch track build

  • ,

    £1,477.50 Excl. VAT Select options
  • ,

    £1,375.00 Excl. VAT Select options

The Monster caliper carries a pad a third longer than the Billet 4, more surface area, more grip. Both the Monster 4 and Monster 6 sit on a 335mm disc and both clear a 17 inch wheel. The choice between four pot and six pot comes down to how the car is used.

For a road car that gets the occasional track day, the Monster 4 is what Cameron fits. The Monster 6 is for a Clio doing proper circuit work or carrying more power than standard, the extra piston area rewards a harder-wearing pad. Both prices here already include an EBC Redstuff pad, DOT fluid and braided hoses, so unlike the RS132-6 further down this page there is nothing extra to add before the kit is complete.

  • Monster 4 at £1,650.00 inc VAT; Monster 6 at £1,773.00 inc VAT
  • Both clear 17 inch wheels
  • 335mm two piece floating discs
  • EBC Redstuff pads, DOT 5.1 fluid and braided hoses included
  • Fits standard and RS Clio MK2 on the same part; made to order in up to 28 working days

Tarox 330mm Super Sport: the flagship for the standard Clio

The biggest Tarox kit on this page, and the title on this one is worth a correction before anything else: our own listing calls it “10pot”, but Tarox’s own build sheet and part code both say eight piston, sequential bore sizing across the pair for even pad contact and a firmer pedal. We would rather tell you the real number than let the title stand.

This is the kit Tarox build for the standard Clio MK2, not the RS. It arrives complete with Corsa pads fitted and braided hoses in the box, same as every other Tarox kit on this page, and it still clears a 17 inch wheel. RS owners wanting the biggest Tarox available to them should look at the 315mm Sport below in the more options section; the 330mm Super Sport is cut for the standard car’s mounting points.

  • £2,365.30 inc VAT, complete with pads and braided hoses fitted
  • Clears 17 inch wheels
  • 330mm two piece disc, balanced to 0.05mm
  • Eight piston billet caliper (not the 10pot the title says), hand assembled in Italy
  • Built for the standard Clio MK2, not the RS mounting points

More across the range

Four more kits worth knowing about. The Tarox 284mm Sport Compact is the entry point into a complete Tarox kit at 15 inch, a single piece disc, not the two piece construction further up the range, built for the standard Clio. The HiSpec 325mm Billet 4 is the biggest Billet 4 caliper offered for this car, still clearing 17 inch. The HiSpec 335/32mm RS132-6 is the newest listing here, a genuine race caliper on a thicker 32mm disc, and the one kit on this page where pads and hoses are priced separately instead of built in. The Tarox 315mm Sport is the RS-specific step below the 330mm flagship, complete with pads and hoses, also clearing 17 inch.

What is actually in each box

On most guides in this series the rule is simple: HiSpec price pads and hoses as extras, Tarox build them in. The Clio MK2 catalogue does not read that way. Every Tarox kit on this page includes Corsa pads and braided hoses as standard. On the HiSpec side, four of the five kits here are older conversion-kit listings that already bundle an EBC pad and DOT 5.1 fluid into the price, with hoses either included or offered as a cheap optional add. Only the RS132-6, the newest kit on this page, follows the pattern you would expect and prices pads and hoses separately.

Common questions

How do I know if my Clio MK2 is the RS or the standard car?

The RS badge (172 or 182) is usually on the boot lid, and the RS runs the 2.0 litre 16v engine, not the 1.2 to 1.6 fitted to the standard range. If you are not sure, give us the registration and we will confirm before anything is ordered. It matters for the Tarox kits specifically, since Tarox cut separate mounting brackets for each version even at the same disc size.

Do the HiSpec kits need to match the RS or standard split too?

No. Every HiSpec kit on this page is listed once, described as fitting "your Renault Clio Mk2" without a separate RS version, so HiSpec are not asking the question at the point of sale. If your car has had any non-standard hub or hub carrier work done, tell us when you order and we will check with HiSpec before the kit goes to build.

Why do some HiSpec kits include pads and hoses and others do not?

It comes down to when the listing was built. Four of the five HiSpec kits on this page are older conversion-kit listings that bundle an EBC pad, DOT 5.1 fluid and, on the Monster kits, braided hoses into the price as standard. The RS132-6, the newest kit here, follows the current HiSpec pattern of pricing pads and hoses separately so you choose the compound. Check the box contents table above before comparing headline prices.

Is the Tarox 330mm kit really a 10 piston caliper?

No, and our own product title is wrong on this one. Tarox's own part code for this kit is B34GT-8, an eight piston caliper with sequential bore sizing. We would rather flag that here than let the title mislead anyone comparing kits by piston count.

Will these kits work with ABS and ESP on the Clio MK2?

Tarox state full ABS and ESP compatibility on all Clio MK2 kits. HiSpec's kits fit to the front hub and do not touch the ABS sensor or reluctor ring, so compatibility on a standard car should be fine. If your Clio has had any non-standard ABS work done, tell us when you order and we will check with HiSpec before the kit goes to build.

What we would actually fit

On a road car keeping its 15 inch wheels, the HiSpec 285mm Billet 4 is the straightforward choice, and it works whichever Clio you have. On 16s, Garreth’s money goes on the Tarox 305mm Sport for anyone who wants the complete kit in one delivery, just make sure the order carries the right listing for a standard or RS car.

For a Clio doing proper track days on 17s, the Monster 4 is what Cameron fits as the default, with the Monster 6 held back for cars making more power or spending longer on the brakes each lap. If you want the biggest kit Tarox build for the standard car, the 330mm Super Sport is the one, eight piston despite what the title says. RS owners after the same complete-kit approach should look at the 315mm Sport instead.

Ring us on 0115 9893488 with which Clio you have, RS or standard, the current wheel size and what the car does at weekends. That first question decides which Tarox listing is correct, and checking spoke clearance on a specific wheel is Cameron’s side of the business. Most calls like this are done inside five minutes.
